I like the booing

The O's fan were a total embarassment....they booed him when introduced during the pregame. Booed him again when coming into the game...and booed every ball he threw. Way to welcome and suppport our players...totally bush, worse than anything I've seen in New York or Boston. I don't think he is the solution for closer, but in the 4th game of the season it was uncalled for. There was no reaction to the O's "gold glove" centerfielder totally misplaying a fly ball allowing 2 runs in and had some pretty weak AB's.

I don't mind the booing. Its not just two games worth of frustration coming out, its 13 years. The fans see a team that should be 3-1 but is instead 1-3 mainly because of one guy.

This ultimately falls on MacPhail because he gave him a closer contract, forcing Trembley to use him and look like a big idiot. It is beyond me why you have to stand by a guy to end games who does not give you the best chance of winning just because of a silly title.

And it's is not just the losing the bothers me, it's the lack of logic. Why is it that in the 9th inning, a manager is no longer allowed to manage? Why is he forced to make a baseball decision based on financial terms dictated by the front office? Its just stupid.

Well what if Gonzalez had signed a 1 year 4 million contract? If that was his contract, would your statement be the same? I don't think so. The fact is they signed him because they thought that Gonzalez would be a good closer based on his track record and he was more established than the other options. Clearly, something is wrong with Mike and he needs to figure it out, FAST!

He had 10 saves and 7 blown saves last year. Gonzalez blowing these 2 saves is not against his track record. He is a good reliever, but not a good closer. His 6 million a year contract is the only thing dictating he is a good closer .

So yes, your kind of right, if he had been signed to a lesser contract then obviously I could not point to his contract and say it's problem.

There are surely elements of the booing that could be considered base. However, I don't find it surprising at all, especially the booing of Gonzalez. The increased expectations for this season, specifically, are a big part of why this has come out so quickly. I expected it, fully; in the game thread I had asked if there was booing in the middle of the first, after a quick 3-spot by Toronto. I felt that was gas on the fire of the preceding series.

The tension is very high, especially around the closer. The one opportunity he didn't blow he barely converted. I just wonder how high the expectations will be for Gonzalez and the team as a whole over the remainder of the season. Indeed, many will throw up their hands and leave, figuring, yes, even after four games, that there's nothing more to expect. While that's a bit rash, the frustration is understandable at this point. It always is, really.

There is no doubt in my mind that booing Mike Gonzalez was wrong. It was his first ever appearance in OPACY in an Orioles uniform. What a terrible fan welcome for him! It was indecent of those who treated the man that way.

I'm sorry but what were we supposed to do? Cheer for him? I know it was his first game at OPACY but he was signed to a huge contract to close games and he has so far shown that he just doesn't have it right now. Something that may be affecting him is that he has been a career NL player and some players just can't make the transition from the NL to the AL. I'm not giving up on him yet but the expectations for this season are higher and if he's not performing like his contract dictates then he needs to be bumped from the closers role.

I'm frustrated that some of my coworkers screw up on a project. Guess I should gather a crowd of folks to boo them as they walk out the door. Maybe management will then see the error of their ways and have them clean toilets with toothbrushes.

    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
    • I have it on dvr and I timed it four times. I got 10.75, 10.80, 10.74, and 10.78.
    • This is exactly what EDC said tonight
    • My guess is more of a safety profile than they preferred. They clearly wanted Wiggins. They ran that pick up fast. And then when you listen to the press conference, the love for the player was obvious.
