7/5: Orioles at Tigers

I'm not liking Samuel's use of the bullpen today.

Obviously Millwood didn't help him, but it looks like Koji won't go another inning.

Hendrickson won't be able to pitch until at the earliest, Wednesday, more likely Thursday. There's going to be at least 2-3 more pitchers used, just watch.

Great job....two runs at a time when you need to stop the other team....why do we continue to have this bum out here...they should have just DFAd him and sent his butt back to Japan...

Seriously?? This is one of his first games back from the DL. The only thing people can really make fun of Uehara for is because of his injuries. He pitches pretty well when he's healthy.

He pitches pretty well except his arm falls off every other week, his hamstring pulls every other week and he can't last more than an inning in temperature greater than 80 degrees...and he has no place in 2011 or beyond...why waste a roster spot on him?....play somebody else who might have the slightest chance of playing a role in 2011 or beyond...

All of that is true. I can't argue that. But, when he pitches, he tends to be a pretty good pitcher, especially out of the bullpen.

But what pitcher do you want to replace him with? It's not like this organization has many relievers mowing down competition in the minors.

How about Armando Gabino?....he is 1-0 with 2.15 ERA in 29 innings as a reliever at Norfolk, though they are running him out there as a starter now apparently?....why not give him a shot?

Or Pat Egan who was 6-1 at Bowie before being promoted to Norfolk?...at Bowie, hitters were .177 against him?...

Or Brandon Cooney who blew through the competition at Frederick....ERA was 0.55 and is doing well so far at Bowie....2-0, 1.42 ERA with hitters average .125 against...

Frederick, Bowie...it's great that these guys are having good seasons, but it's still A ball. Let them face some tougher challenges in AAA before coming up here.

Though (as in the minors forum thread), many believe these 2 guys might make their way to the 40 man roster after this season.

    • He is one of my favorite guys on the team. So happy for him. He didn’t moan when he got sent down last year.  He was grinding over the winter to get better and is working with someone on the mental side. Just a great story and now a guy that has forced his way into the rotation.
    • He is a great story. We will have to continue to make room for him because he is the 90% outcome for many behind him.
    • I think Cal's record was able to happen because of a time in O's history when there was no strong manager.  I doubt Cal's streak would have made it to one season if he had played his whole season under Weaver.  Weaver was way ahead of his time on matchups, platoons and resting players.  The  bigger thing about Cal's streak, imo was that it was allowed to happen, where it took on a life of it's own, dwarfing the team.  I'm not diminishing the feat, but there's rarely a player that plays 162 games in a year now.  It's just recognized that people wear down and need rest.  I want to say to that probably the 5 players behind Cal on the streak list did things to basically cheat and prolong their streak especially Gehrig, where he would hit once and then not play the rest of the game.
    • Goes right back to Ted Williams. Get a good pitch to hit and drive it.
    • There was an attempt to debunk this article in the other O'Hearn thread where it's the OP, but in it O'Hearn explains that his efforts to change launch angle and severely limit when he swings underlie the improved performance since coming to the Orioles.
    • I'm thinking that Suarez can be that extra high leverage arm the O's need.  Someone who can take some of the closing pressure off Kimbrel.  No, Hyde, the closer doesn't have to get every save.  I hate when Hyde uses every high leverage arm in a single game then the next game you just have the B squad.
    • Would have been nice for his campaign if he had been allowed to go 8 or even go for the shutout.
