I don't think they'd shoot Spoone all the way into the top 3 based on just one year. I'll pick him for fourth-then Reimold, Rowell and Wieters.

So you would go with Reimold and his 111 at bats this season? Spoone did pitch solidly the year before, but improved significantly in several areas this year (including playoffs); H/IP .91 to .71; K/BB 1.13 to 2.21; K/IP .70 to .88; ERA 3.56 to 3.02. What impressed me was that he did not just do one thing better, but instead had better control, combined with more polished stuff.

My guess would be Reimold here.

I'm a little surprised that Spoone is going to end up as high as he is, though there is no doubt that he has improved steadily as he has moved up the ladder. Good for him, though. Hopefully his 2008 performance will justify his high ranking.

Even with Rowell's upside potential, the stats he had were a little disappointing. For that I think he falls at 4. His numbers were slightly above average for the league. Of course he is still very young but the strikeouts are a redflag as something he needs to improve on to move up the ladder. I think Reimold had a good enough season to be ahead of Rowell because Reimold has proven more at a higher level even though his upside isnt as good as Rowell's. Reimold still has very good power potential for the majors and can give +defense along with a good OPS.

I still think Rowell will be a bright spot for us but he had a season that didnt lock him in at 1 or 2.

My guess is:

4. Rowell

3. Spoone

2. Reimold

1. Wieters

Maybe, maybe not. You'll understand why I said that after the top ten is finalized...

Keep us guessing, Tony! B-more's guess could be right on! Reimold did have a 900+ OPS in Bowie and Rowell's was disappointing for most. Spoone at #3 is a good bet, but Reimold and he could be switched. Either way, this is fun!

Rowell will not be #4, in fact he could easily be #1. The only reason Wieters will be higher is he plays catcher. When they are both at their peak in the Majors, Rowell will have better numbers. Wieters is three years older.

I like this part of the year as well.. :D

Actually, I think most people in these threads actually are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to our minor league players, hopefully at least partially because they follow them all year through the Hangout.

There is always going to be some disagreements and such, but that's the way it goes. It's a lot of fun for everyone though and I enjoy doing the countdown.

Last year, we took a risk by going with Pope, Florimon, Adams and Britton in the top 12 (inexperienced players with upside). Three floundered and Britton held his own enough to move into the top ten. This year, we really didn't even have to take too many risks in the top ten so that shows the system is improving if you ask me.

In fact, 11-15 are legitimate major leaguer prospects with upside, so I think that speaks well. The only thing really missing is the can't miss super star pitcher or hitter (Weiters is still an unknown for he most part). The Orioles with Jordan and Stockstill have quietly developed solid major league quality depth to the minor league system. The only question that remains is do they have impact players on the horizon?

    • Urias looks pretty cooked too though, and he's not providing the kind of defensive flexibility that Mateo is, and he doesn't have very good splits for platooning.  At least for 2023 and 2024 Mateo has had good platoon splits.
    • SSS but Holliday was playing incredible defense after like the first game or two when he seemed to have some jitters.  He had +3 OAA in a very short span.  Mateo has looked a little awkward at 2nd to be honest, and he's not the best at making the double play turn.
    • Hoping for a speedy recovery. That all happened fast. Not my initial impression reading the write up.
    • McCann looks cooked but he's in his last year and our options at backup C aren't great unless we're willing to trade for one.  But I'm not giving up a lot for a backup C.   I'd like to find a replacement for Urias.  He didn't look great last year and he's being thrust into a role that he's not really cut out for right now.  I don't think he's getting the 2022 magic back.  Maybe Westburg can go to 3rd full time and one of our 5 AAA 2nd basemen can work in with Mateo at 2nd.
    • I quoted myself, because I wanted to share something with you all.  I have memory issues.  Nothing full blown or anything, but I don't recall things nearly as well as I once did.  I mention this because it occurred to me that I posted a very similar thing about McCann last year, and he performed notably better in the 2nd half.  At least I believe so.   It's not that I feel I'm exactly wrong about McCann, but rather that he showed himself to be better just last season and could do so again.  I hope so. Memory issues are nothing to be ashamed of, though I'd be pretending if it didn't bother me.  I've been dealing with this for maybe five years or so, though it gets worse every year.  At 59, that's younger than most that have such issues.   I'm sure in a forum as populated as this one, there could be others going through what I am.  It is what it is... it's life, and I hope you're all doing your best with it.
    • Estrada and Tejada both continued their recent surges today.  Estrada was 2 for 4 with a double, while Tejada was 3 for 3  with a homer.  Tejada has his OPS up to .737, not bad for a league where .654 is average.  Estrada is at .628 and climbing.
    • Jeff Tackett was also part of the single-worst baserunning display I've seen in my entire life.  No exaggeration.  I was at the game with a friend who was at her first baseball game ever, and she asked me what was going on.  I still have no idea. https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/1993/04/18/three-man-jam-at-third-costs-the-orioles-7-5/7eb4c3d6-545f-481a-89f4-9bc0036ad89a/
