Cliff Lee Placed on Waivers

Yes, he is owed a ton of money but he wouldn't cost anything in prospects and

signing a legitimate ACE would cost just as much on the open market anyway ($87.5 mil). Why wouldn't we do this? Cliff Lee locked up with the Orioles for 4 seasons, no prospects traded away, it just makes sense; whether or not Angelos would approve it is another story.

Any thoughts?

Doesn't think happen every year? Even if we were willing to pick up his contract, there's little chance he will pass through waivers. Someone will put in a claim, the Phillies will ask for their top prospects, they won't give them up, and the Phillies will pull him off waivers. This happens to a lot of players with high priced contracts after the non-waiver trade deadline. I can think of any of the productive ones that actually pass through waivers.

The Rangers would not give up Olt (who is called up today) for Cliff Lee & the Phillies wouldnt trade him unless Olt was part of the trade, so what makes anybody here think the Orioles or any other team could just have him?

No doubt the Phillies will demand something or pull him back.

If we are truly are in a wildcard and division race here, do we make the claim to just prevent another AL from getting him?

Obviously, right now we lose the claim to teams like the Red Sox, and Jays. But can making the claim to prevent Lee from going to the Yanks, Tigers, Rangers or whoever else?

I cant see the Sox or Tor picking him up. Maybe to block others teams, sure. But with Crawford's contract on their hands, they won't pick up another potentially poison contract

He is owed over $100 million the next 4 years. Unless the Phillies offer to pay a lot of that, they aren't getting anything of value for him.

I'm thinking Manny passed through but not 100% sure.
