I was interested in this part of it:

Fantasy spin: Hernandez would be one of the top shortstops in fantasy baseball if defensive skills dominated the scoring categories. Unfortunately, defense doesn’t win fantasy baseball championships.

How does fantasy baseball score/handle/weigh an individual player's defensive performance? I have no idea.

(*Chris Berman high-squeaky voice*): What!?!?

Are you yanking my chain? It's just hitting and pitching stats, with zero D?

Is this really true?

it's not, it's usually hitting/pitching is a five star prospect and defense is a three star.

Can we send scouts to some T-Ball leagues across the country? I'm sure there's a 6 year old with a decent glove and enough pop on his bat to get the ball past the pitcher's mound. He might even make contact every now and then.

Obviously - a huge upgrade!

Count me in the group that's willing to give him a chance at SS.

Given that 2008 will be all about rebuilding, I'm ok if he spends the first half manning the middle infield.

I don't care if he swats .215 as long as he plays solid D and is decent running the bases.

I don't want to take this down a path not related to the thread topic, but if you're thinking, 'no way do I give this guy a shot' or 'he is not the long term solution', below is a list of potential 2009 FA at SS:

Shortstops

Orlando Cabrera (34)

David Eckstein (34)

Adam Everett (32)

Rafael Furcal (31)

Cristian Guzman (31)

Cesar Izturis (29) OPTION FOR O's ????

Felipe Lopez (29) OPTION FOR O's ????

Edgar Renteria (33) - $11MM club option for '09 with a $3MM buyout

Juan Uribe (30)

Omar Vizquel (42) - $5.2MM club option for '09 with a $0.3MM buyout

If he is officially named the starting shortstop, keep an eye on his performance early in the season because he may be worth picking up as a free agent, particularly in AL-only leagues.

Haahahahaha!

I'd feel more confident using no body at the SS position over him.

Some leagues will use errors but other than that, defense has nothing to do with fantasy baseball and really, what should it?

It is a stat based thing...No real stats for defense.
