Tonight's Playoff Game

Yeah, I know, it's technically game 163, but it's really the wildcard-wildcard game; which is pretty wild, if you think about it. Anyway, the Rangers are being legally owned by Maddon, Price and Longo. The Rangers just got away with a 3rd out, game saving trap by the CF, but it still won't help them. Wash will be interviewing for bench coach openings this December.

And Texas loses a second straight play-in game. At home.

They also collapsed down the stretch 2 years in a row. The thread is mostly me babbling to myself, but some others have made posts, also.

And yes, I know that they won 7 straight games before tonight's loss, but the fact that they were in that situation is because they went 6-16 in their previous 22 games to go from having a 2-game lead in their division to needing to win each and every one of those last 7 games just to make the play-in game of the wildcard game.

Last year, they had a 5-game lead with 9 games to play, and they blew that, also.

I'm looking forward to tonight's game in Pittsburgh - should be a brawl. I have a strange belief that the Reds are going to shock the world. I would love to see an Oakland -Cincy rematch....although the 1972 Reds and A's were both HoF loaded teams, the 2013 versions prolly not so much. Anyway, I would still like to see the match up.

Someone in the Cincinnati FO has to be asking "Hey Dusty, what the hell does Johnny Cueto find so amusing in the dugout after giving up 3 ER in 3.1 - while watching his teammate struggle on the mound with the bases loaded?" I can't stand guys laughing and smiling while their season is going down the drain...it's the ultimate disrespect to their fanbase.

I'm with you on that. When people were talking up Swisher as a FA option in the Spring, I was thinking that I would rather see them lose an extra game or 2 than have to cheer for him.
Alex Rodriguez isn’t beloved among his peers.

The slugger, who continued his assault on the record books Tuesday night, was voted by 100 big-league baseball players as the sport’s second-most hated star (10 percent) behind White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski (34 percent) in a “secret survey” by Men’s Journal.

And look who came in third with 9 percentage points: jovial Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher.

“Everything about (Swisher) is annoying, from his mannerisms to his always wanting to ‘bro’ it down,” an unnamed American League veteran told the magazine. “Being around him is just exhausting.”

    • What if he bats .100 for the next month?
    • I agree. And I think he has a higher upside than Kjerstad because he's actually a very good fielder. He's a guy that I think deserves regular playing time.
    • Back when we DFA'd Bauman, I said the right move would have been sending down Akin. He's just not very good. Sure he'll tease you with a month or two of good ball but he's very average. Cano is Cano. He had his 15 minutes of fame. He intimidates no one. And that's what you need from a high leverage guy. Vieira --- no need mincing words here --- he's not just a project, he stinks. Everyone has tried to fix his command issue and everyone has failed.  On the other hand, while he's no Bautista I don't mind rolling with Kimbrel this year. I like Coulombe. I think Perez, Webb and Tate are "ok".  The overall issue is that this bullpen isn't the bullpen a championship squad needs. Elias should have known that. Maybe he thought the offense and starting pitching would make up for our bullpen deficiencies. No team is perfect, I get that. I just don't know how a guy as bright as Elias thought this bullpen would be good enough coming out of Spring Training. Let's hope he makes some moves to get us a couple quality relievers.
    • From my understanding of the data the impetus for pulling pitchers early is not (usually) due to pitcher fatigue or pitcher injury risk, but rather because they're not as good the 3rd/4th time thru the lineup.  But I think I'd rather have our starters go from good to mediocre the 3rd time thru the lineup, versus trusting the crappy members of our bullpen with the ball.  Granted Akin had a bad game today and he had been pretty good, but we also tried to have Cionel get thru 2 innings and he gives up a leadoff triple.
    • Yeah, I'd like to see Hyde push the starters a bit more too. But if we see it, I think it'll be a pretty gradual ramp as the season goes on.  Seems like 90 pitches is the new 100, and unless the standings situation gets dire they're going to keep managing like the most important bullets are the ones saved for October.
    • Holmes had a blown save and the Angels beat the Yankees, maybe he's available.
    • Hyde needs to adjust his bullpen usage IMO.  We don't have the shutdown options we had last year and he's managing like we do.  We have good starters, push them a little bit and try to squeeze extra innings out of them while getting someone warm if they run into trouble.   Grayson could have gone an extra inning and maybe we wouldn't have given up 4 in the last few innings to put the game out of reach.  I understand that there will be occasions where you invite criticism that you're leaving your starters out to dry, but most of our bullpen options have been really unreliable and I think if you stick to the guns that got you there knowing what our bullpen is like you just live with it if it doesn't work out.  It's not like we're pushing our starters to 120 pitches.
