PBT ranks baseballs worst off-seasons

On paper it was the Jays. In actual effect... yes, it was the Sux. :(

I am quite accurate when predicting the past. But the Red Sox did make moves last year. They might not have gotten the most acclaim but they did sign players. Something we haven't gotten around to yet.

And got lucky with EVERY one of them. It was tragic.

If they wait until 2015, the value goes down as he'd be a one year rental. It's unlikely they're going to be able to afford to extend his contract. I see your point and they could manage like the Orioles with Wieters but I assume they're smarter than that.

I tend to think they can wait till the trade deadline and then determine if they are competitive enough to keep and try to make a run (perhaps add to team) or move him for a mint at the deadline. If Price has a good first half they should be able to extort a kings ransom for him from some team that fancies themselves a David Price away from a championship run.

I am good with keeping Matt and Chris especially if DD does not see value coming back right now. That's predicated on the understanding that we pull the trigger IF and when we should to move them.....that's the part that worries me.

I trust DD will make the right call on that. Not to sure about Peter though....will hope he will allow DD to do what he has to.

I'd trade Matt+ for Price. I wanna keep Chris.

So they brought back their first baseman on a team friendly deal and added Heath Bell, who it is rumored they may flip, and Ryan Hanigan and his 58 OPS+. What a coup

I would argue ranking the Tigers 4th best is almost worse.

They got rid of their second biggest (insert fat joke here) offensive threat. They dealt away Fister who was actually underpaid compared to the market. They lost Infante and Benoit to free agency.

They brought in Ian Kinsler to replace Infante. That's an upgrade. They got Nathan to replace Benoit. that is also an upgrade. Otherwise, they are relying on Castellanos to replace Fielder (essentially) and have weakened their rotation.

They got lucky with most, but not all. They signed Ryan Dempster for 2/$26.5 mm and he went 8-9 with a 4.57 ERA. Gomes and Ross were just OK for what they were paid.

An underrated aspect of the Red Sox's season was that they had ridiculously bad luck with injuries in 2012. Just having a healthy team, and getting rid of Bobby Valentine, set them up for huge improvement in 2013. The free agents helped a lot, but that was far from the whole story.

Zzzzz good god this offseason is so boring. There aren't even rumors that we care about. Since Balfour, it's like the Warehouse threw Rodney's name out there and then closed for business. This is getting really ridiculous.

Well it is the Holiday Season. After all the work they got done at the winter meetings they get some well deserved time-off.

It's not like they didn't make a lot of okay small moves - they did. But they needed to make a couple of big moves to make it an offseason that should help them win. For example, the Lough trade would have us acquire a guy who projects to be a nice 4th OFer. But because we don't have a starting LFer, it looks - to me, at least - like he's the starting LFer. So, we're likely depending too much on him and turning what could be a positive into a likely negative. And while there's still time to get a starting LFer, I don't hear anything from the O's that sounds like they will.

I fear that Dan is still just as busy as he was before Balfour and NObody is biting on his deals. :(

    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
    • I have it on dvr and I timed it four times. I got 10.75, 10.80, 10.74, and 10.78.
    • This is exactly what EDC said tonight
    • My guess is more of a safety profile than they preferred. They clearly wanted Wiggins. They ran that pick up fast. And then when you listen to the press conference, the love for the player was obvious.
