Connolly: Orioles Focused on Adding SP, Not CL

Also lost at the tail end of this piece is that the Orioles would also like to add another more experienced back up catching option.

The article list Olivo, Buck and McKenry as options with the Orioles focus being on Mike "The Fort" McKenry. The Pirates traded for Buck after an injury ended McKenry's season last year. Having seen him play I like McKenry, he yells blue collar player. Decent defense, okay bat and some reasonable power. At the same time I would love to see the Orioles try and develop some internal talent. As little as the backup gets used, I don't think that would be a detriment for the Orioles.

I'm ok with Hunter/O'Day attempting to close games, but if that's the case, they really need to sign another reliever to shore up the 7th/8th innings or for bullpen depth in general.

They already signed that Ryan Webb guy with the smoking hot girlfriend. Also they have Stinson and Steve Johnson. Another depth guy wouldn't make much sense unless it was a true closer, and those guys (Mujica, Joe Smith) are gone or have question marks (Balfour, Rodney).

I like the idea of sticking with what we have in the bullpen IF doing so allows us to sign Garza. Garza is the guy for us because he does not cost a pick.

That's true as well. Some of the Orioles' strategies make sense on a micro level, but in the big-picture view, they all seem to be adding up to "Let's not do much of anything."

Dan seems to be going all-in on trusting player development. It's true that if the Orioles can develop players better than their competition then they can be successful. Whether or not he can actually do it remains to be seen.

We do seem to have more breakout players than in the past. Tillman, Davis, and Machado are the notable ones. I don't know how much credit Dan deserves for those guys though. Probably not a whole lot.

I'll be watching how the current top prospects develop and judging Dan based on that. If he says our minor league system is going to be our main source of new players, he'd better back that up.

I seen so much about how we have to sign Garza, or else.

There is so much hype about the guy, you would think he was a great TOR and first round lock for HOF.

He has a 8 year career, with a 67-67 record and 3.84.

Granted, I have been told, wins are not everything.

I see a strikeout pitcher that can give up the HR ball.

Correction: Wins are not anything. Especially when you've spent much of the last 2 years on a terrible Cubs team.

Nobody's saying Garza is a Hall of Famer, but he's a high strikeout pitcher (as you mentioned) who just turned 30 and has years of experience pitching well in the AL East. And unlike Jimenez and E.Santana, he won't cost a draft pick.

love your stuff! does tanaka propel the yanks to "legit world series contender"? also, if you were a gm, how much would you pay for him? having no draft pick compensation attached to him is great, but you're still potentially paying $100+M for an unknown commodity.

Propels them to legit division title contender, but still not the favorites in my view. That said, he's pretty much the only great option available to them to make their team more than a win or so better for 2014. Santana's not a great fit, Garza's medicals are apparently scaring teams off, and I have no idea what to make of Ubaldo.

Teams decide to move on for lots of reasons, but Garza DID cost Texas trade pieces and despite what would be reasonable salary demands, they aren't interested in signing him. Kind of a flag for me.

Burnett/Arroyo/Hammel (two of 3) are great for me. BP arms are available in late spring training. I'd like another bat of some sort as well but given that I can't figure out exactly who, I'll leave that to Buck and DD's judgement.

The 2012 Jim Johnson trade will be to the Orioles what the 2012 Anquan Boldin trade was to the Ravens. We will revisit this pain point and poor decision with every blown save and failed closer. Trading wins for losses just because a player doesn't fall within some budgetary standard...

He was 4-5 last year for a playoff contender last year.

I'm not sure one great year (with a disappointing postseason) and one disappointing year makes JJ a good comp with Boldin.

I agree and disagree. While I liked JJ, spending that much money on a closer isn't a good use of funds for any team, unless that closer is one of the truly elites in the game, and those are few and far between. However, I do think the odds are decent that Orioles fans are going to see that they didn't know how good they had with Johnson by the end of the 2014 season.

    • Yeah, I agree something like this might happen some day, but only if the union comes around to believing MLB is on shaky financial footing -- if and when that ever happens. I don't like the idea of voiding a players' contract then and there, but perhaps performing below a certain level would trigger some contract years in the future to automatically become option years.  Something along those lines. It's hard to imagine deals like this today, except possibly here and there for players who are known to be very inconsistent.  As long as baseball is considered financially healthy I'm sure the union would push back strongly against deals like this, especially in large numbers.
    • Thank you. I knew there was something bogus about that post. I saw Cal play SS. And Gunnar is no Cal at SS. Not even close. And this is coming from a big fan of Gunnar. I would like to see him play a traditional power position. Call me old fashioned. He’s hurting the team at SS.
    • Interesting.  We live in a data obsessed world now but it's not the answer to everything.  There should be a mix.
    • Tobias Myers for the brewers tonight: 6 innings 4H -1ER 1BB 11 Ks. not bad at all!
    • I doubt solid MLB pitchers can be acquired just by trading position players the vast majority of the time.  Look at how we acquired Bradish and Povich -- by trading solid (at the time anyway) MLB level pitchers.  In those trades we were on the other end, but we forced teams to trade good young pitchers for Bundy and Lopez respectively.  Now we did acquire McDermott and Seth Johnson by trading Trey Mancini.  So it does happen that pitching can sometimes be acquired trading only a position player, but Mancini had had a strong major league career to that point.  My point is I don't think you can expect to acquire pitching only by trading position players -- but if you can it may need to be a strong veteran that is not easy to part with. Perhaps we could acquire Tarik Skubal for just Jackson Holliday -- or Holliday plus one or two other strong position prospects.  But that would be a whole other level of a blockbuster trade. Also, I'm not sure how we can say the system is bereft of homegrown minor league pitching talent and then complain that we traded Baumeister and Chace -- two homegrown minor league pitchers that everyone here seems to agree are talented.  We can criticize the trade, but clearly there was and probably still are some desirable arms in the system that we'd rather not trade.  No, none of the ones Elias drafted have made it to the bigs yet, but maybe those two would have been among the first.
    • Seth Johnson on the Phillies' "philosophy": Orioles are data driven, Phillies are more "old school". I don't get much out of this but it's a data point. https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/seth-johnson-mlb-debut-phillies-orioles-trade/613582/ “I think the big thing is that Baltimore is very data-based,” he said. “Here’s a nice blend of the numbers and baseball strategy. Kind of old school. And I’ve been really enjoying it so far. For me, it’s kind of simplified everything. Concentrating on basic concepts like moving the fastball around. Not worrying about pitch shapes all the time. Just going out here and trying to pitch.”
    • If we have room, why wouldn't we add Pham and Van Loon just to have available depth in AAA (whether or not they are at risk of being taken)?
