It's insane.

To be fair, they are 26-28 since July 1, good for the 20th best record in MLB. That doesn’t exactly scream “good baseball team”.

The injuries caught up to them. That’s evident to everyone who pays more than passing attention. It doesn’t mean that the fan base can’t be frustrated by the performance. My Yankee friend and me were texting earlier and I made the comment earlier that if the O’s had suffered even half of the injuries they’ve had to play through this year, they’re running away with the division. I think that’s a reasonable statement/claim but they have played not awesome for two straight months. The sky hasn’t fallen but it’s been fall’ing’ for a while.

The injuries certainly have been an issue but I think a large source of frustration has been the guys that have stayed healthy just haven't performed particularly well.  Adley, Gunnar, Burnes - those are probably your top 3 players on paper and all have performed poorly to some degree over the past few months.  Even with the injuries, if those guys perform just to their means then we're probably a few games up right now instead of a half a game back.

When I said "It's Insane" I was referring to the fact that the O's somehow have managed to be only a half game out of first place. Just when you think injuries can't further weaken the team, someone else goes down.

Heck, it's so bad I'm afraid I might have to go on the IL

All fair. I’ve long suspected that Adley has something physical that’s nagging him. He’s gained weight and isn’t moving well behind the plate or in the batter’s box. I suspect something lower back or possibly lower half. He just hasn’t looked right for a while. Gunnar, I think is more of hitting that second year wall of playing 1000 mph at SS for the first time. It’s not excuses for either player of course, just what I am seeing.

Burnes, maybe it’s the newborns. Who knows..? I can’t say that I can sympathize with having two brand new babies at home but have to think that it’s a factor. Again, not an excuse. They’re professionals and are paid for the ability to stay focused through these things.

    • The youngster has shown us glimpses of dominance, and then, the very next start he is awful. Into the 8th inning against the White Sox with 10 strikeouts and no walks, he pitched one of the best games of ANY Oriole starter this season. But the  start before, against the Dodgers, he was bombed, and the game AFTER his great performance against Chicago he was battered by the Red Sox. We could really use a series win with a good start b Povich against Detroit. But I'm done trying to figure this guy out. He can be great one start and horrible the next. What do you think will be his line on Sunday?
    • I'd give it to Burnes.  Great performance after the rough patch he went through.
    • How can you even type the letters that spell that name?  If he were to become the coach, the entire team would participate in mandatory satanic rituals that include sacrificing children and the mutilation of newborn puppies. I heard from a reliable source that him, who we should not name, once bit the head off a baby kitten nun before going to bat and then mouth kissed the umpire who gave him an automatic home run.
    • That's not true in the case of Chourio whatsoever, and using him as an example actually supports the point that those of us are making that are advocating for Mayo to get more playing time - that elite prospects need to play every day to get comfortable, and their teams need to let them struggle if need be. Chourio had a .558 OPS in April in 85 at bats, and he had .542 OPS in May in 65 at bats. He struggled mightily, but the Brewers gave him regular playing time and let him play through it. The precise thing the Orioles have failed to do with Mayo, Kjerstad, Norby, Cowser, Westburg, Ortiz, and Stowers.
    • By the time Rutschman had 180 PA, his   OPS was well over .700.   Ditto Cowser.   Holliday at .524 is struggling way more than those two did.  He’s also several years younger, so maybe a longer adjustment period is to be expected.   But it’s still pretty disappointing that he’s not making much progress right now, after looking a little better when his second call-up started.   I don’t consider Mayo comparable.  He hasn’t even had 40 PA yet, and his playing time has been way more sporadic than Holliday’s.  He’s had a bad start but not enough PT to wonder why he hasn’t shown improvement yet.
    • Mid 80s.   The problem was that I had no idea where it was going.
