Recent Success of Over Slot Players Taken in Rounds 11-50.

Recommended Posts

With the draft coming up shortly I wanted to do a look back at the guys the O's have decided to spend substantial bonuses on after Round 10.

Home Runs: $615,000 spent

2011 26. (785) - Zach Davies - RHP - Mesquite HS, AZ - Discussion thread -$575,000

2012 19 - Joshua Hader: LHP, Old Mill Senior Hill (MD) - Discussion Thread - $40,000

Decent Prospects: $250,000 spent

2010 18. Sebastian Vader, RHP, San Marcos HS (CA) agreed to terms 7/1 - $150,000

2013 22. - Jon Keller - RHP - University of Tampa (FL) - Discussion Thread -$100,000

Barely Prospects: $1,445,000 spent

2009 11 Michael Ohlman C Lakewood Ranch HS, Bradenton, Fla. Fla. $995,000

2009 18 536 Jarret Martin LHP Bakersfield (Calif.) JC Calif.$250,000

2013: 25. - Daniel Ayers - LHP - Columbus North HS (IN) -$200,000

Busts: $ 2,065,000 spent

2009: 22 656 Cameron Coffey LHP Houston Christian HS Texas $990,000

2009: 30 896 Brenden Webb OF Palomar (Calif.) JC Calif. $250,000

2010: 28 (838). Jaime Esquivel, RHP, South Houston HS (TX) - $225,000

2012: 11. (342) - Kevin Grendall, LHP - San Pasqual HS (CA)- $100,000

2012:14. (432) - Sean McAdams, RHP - Cardinal Mooney School, (FL) - $100,000

2012:16 - Luc Rennie: RHP, Torrey Pines HS, CA- $100,000

2013: 12. - Jake Bray, RHP, Feather River College, CA - $200,000

2013:16 - Randolph Gassaway- 1B - Riverwood International Charter School (GA)- $100,000

So that's only 2/15 players that look like they will be impact players. So 4 million for two players. My conclusion is that I'd like to see us spend more in the Caribbean where over the same time period we've signed Schoop, Ed Rod, Reyes, O.Peralta. Not to mention Alvarez, Urrutia and Leyva.

Very interesting; thanks for the research. How about we do both: sign overslots and more international FAs??

As long as you have some of your allotment from the first 10 rounds, I think you still can.

You get up to 105% of the total pool to spend through all the rounds. 100k per round after round 10 does not count against this. All picks 1 through 10 must be signed to make this occur.

Yeah, but it's my understanding that you can save on picks through the first 10 rounds and overload (pay overslot) to one or more of those picks by using the saved money on the other picks. You can pay 3M to a player with a slot value of 500K in the 4th round. You can't pay 3M or 500K to someone in the 15th round even if you have extra pool money saved from the first ten rounds. That's my understanding without looking it up again.

Yes. You can. As long as you save it from the pool and still sign all of the first 10.

The O's are being criticized for overdrafting several of their first 10 picks. Maybe they are saving it to pay some of the later picks overslot. I think this strategy might work better than drafting tons of toolsy guys. I remember one year (05 or 06?), the O's drafted around 10 small defensive minded middle infielders. It was almost like the O's were trying to draft Brian Roberts' replacement.
