I think the fans who go for the head fake every year are even worse.

Oooh... basketball metaphors. So this is the part of the Jays season where they just went a 14-0 run with a couple three-pointers to pull the game back even, but now they're beat and they have to sub in that tall white guy who's only on the roster because he's 7' 1"? Yea, I don't know much of anything about basketball...

I have tickets for the family to the O's-Jays game on the 20th at SkyDome (yes, it's still SkyDome). My wife says I'm not allowed to wear my bilingual Cito Sucks shirt from the mid-90s (yes, we were poking fun at Canadians French/English requirements). I take that as a challenge.

Same thing I've always said about them.

Good talent. Bad clubhouse.

They have the talent to go on these crazy runs. They've done it the past few years. Don't have the leadership/effort to sustain it.

Not only have they done it the past few years, but they do it at the same time. Early to mid June.

It's funny to see this thread considering this is probably what every team was saying about us until like ten minutes ago. Oh how quickly we forget things can turn around at the drop of a hat.

Exactly what I was thinking reading a lot of these posts. The fans of every other team have probably dismissed the Orioles the last few seasons based on our performance from 1998 to 2011.

Past performance is not necessarily a predictor of future performance. Looks how quickly the Astros and Rangers have turned it around. I see four teams in the division with flaws in both their pitching and offense and then I see one team with flawed pitching and an offense that is much, much better than everyone else. Their bats can carry them.

Based on run scoring differential alone I think it's reasonable to call the Jays the favorite at this point in a tight division. But everyone has a shot. The only team I am close to putting a fork in is the Red Sox.

The Jays have as good a shot as anyone of winning the division. Their offense is leaps and bounds better than the rest of the division. Their pitching is pretty bad. If they get some consistency there they are going to be dangerous.

No question, they have a chance to win. I have a feeling it will come down to us, them and NY. I don't think TB can sustain and Boston is digging a hole.

But, it's baseball. Any of this can change. But I'm not any more worried about the Jays because they've had a hot streak. They're a very emotional team with very emotional players. That can carry you during long winning streaks but you need some solid guys there to sustain.

      Thank you. I knew there was something bogus about that post. I saw Cal play SS. And Gunnar is no Cal at SS. Not even close. And this is coming from a big fan of Gunnar. I would like to see him play a traditional power position. Call me old fashioned. He’s hurting the team at SS.

      Interesting.  We live in a data obsessed world now but it's not the answer to everything.  There should be a mix.

      I doubt solid MLB pitchers can be acquired just by trading position players the vast majority of the time.  Look at how we acquired Bradish and Povich -- by trading solid (at the time anyway) MLB level pitchers.  In those trades we were on the other end, but we forced teams to trade good young pitchers for Bundy and Lopez respectively.  Now we did acquire McDermott and Seth Johnson by trading Trey Mancini.  So it does happen that pitching can sometimes be acquired trading only a position player, but Mancini had had a strong major league career to that point.  My point is I don't think you can expect to acquire pitching only by trading position players -- but if you can it may need to be a strong veteran that is not easy to part with. Perhaps we could acquire Tarik Skubal for just Jackson Holliday -- or Holliday plus one or two other strong position prospects.  But that would be a whole other level of a blockbuster trade. Also, I'm not sure how we can say the system is bereft of homegrown minor league pitching talent and then complain that we traded Baumeister and Chace -- two homegrown minor league pitchers that everyone here seems to agree are talented.  We can criticize the trade, but clearly there was and probably still are some desirable arms in the system that we'd rather not trade.  No, none of the ones Elias drafted have made it to the bigs yet, but maybe those two would have been among the first.

      If we have room, why wouldn't we add Pham and Van Loon just to have available depth in AAA (whether or not they are at risk of being taken)?

      I think Young will be added, and that is it. I like Pham, but no AAA experience makes him unlikely to be taken. Whatever open spots should be used to upgrade the bullpen and other pitching depth. It is well documented here that we don’t have much beyond raw guys like Strowd and Heid. we lack flexibility and options. This has to change.
