So the assumption here appears to be that Arroyo is old, and broken and terrible, and will be handed a slot in the Orioles rotation despite being old, terrible and broken.

In that case, I'm strongly against the signing.

But if instead he's physically good, has good scouting reports, is essentially free, and will be one of several candidates competing for a roster spot that's another story.

:) Exactly. I get a kick out of some of the comments I see over news like this. Funny thing is, when a guy like this signs with another team and ends up returning to form and doing well, we see the "Where were the Orioles on this? DD caught sleeping again." posts.

That's because everyone thinks they are smarter than the GM. Everyone makes their moves based in a vacuum, without thought of money, effects on other signing, effects on the team as a whole, and because their "dream team" never actually competes together on the field, they are never held accountable to what their team would have done together as a team, and instead they get to point to the stats of the guys they wanted and say "Duke shoulda done this and not that...." Its classic Monday Morning Quarterbacking at its finest and it happens every year. Just have to accept it for it is and move on.

Ironically, I had a dream just two nights ago where "the Orioles acquired Bronson Arroyo and prospects from Milwaukee in return for Luke Scott and the rights to Greedo from Star Wars: A New Hope."

It seemed like a pretty reasonable trade mid-dream.

Milwaukee gets Luke Scott AND Greedo? This is the most one sided trade ever!

Greedo is dead (Han never gave him a chance), and I assume Luke Scott has a 2am talk show on a 10 watt AM station in Idaho.

Han shot first.

Well, I assume the rights to Greedo would still allow him to be used in all of their marketing. (At least, that's how I rationalized it in my head, apparently)

"On December 19, 2013, Scott agreed to a one-year, $300,000 deal with the SK Wyverns of the Korea Baseball Championship. The $300,000 is made up of a $50,000 signing bonus and a $250,000 contract.[11] On July 16, it was reported that Scott had been cut from the team for calling the coach, Lee Man-soo, a "liar" and a "coward". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_Scott
