And there was much rejoicing.

The Angels lead the AL with 26 sac hits, on pace for about 45. In 1917 Ray Chapman (of killed by pitch fame) had 67 sac hits by himself. In a year where he was the 2nd best hitter on the Indians was worth almost eight wins.

Did you think that maybe he was that valuable because of all the sac bunts?

Didn't think so.

In an environment where the league is hitting .248/.318/.320, sacrifice bunts make a lot more sense than they do in the current .259/.323/.425 environment.

But does it makes sense for a guy putting up a 302/370/409 line to be doing the bunting?

Probably not, but it would be interesting to analyze a lineup that's (roughly) Hyun Soo Kim, Manny Machado (i.e. Tris Speaker) and seven Ryan Flahertys. It could be that somebody else led off, Chapman bunted them over, and Speaker knocked them in. Probably doesn't make sense, but I'd have to see how they actually batted.

Kim with wheels, Chapman had what 13 triples that year?

The deadball era thinking wasn't "should I use a one-run strategy like the bunt"? It was "whew... we got a guy on base. Which one-run strategy will we use?"

Chapman was one homer behind the '17 Indians' leader. He had two.
