Cleavinger Named Orioles Minor League Pitcher of the Month

Reliever Went 3-0 with a 1.84 ERA in Six April Appearances

SALISBURY, MD -- Delmarva Shorebirds relief pitcher Garrett Cleavinger has been rewarded for his excellent start to the 2016 season by being named the Baltimore Orioles? Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April.

Cleavinger made six appearances, five of which were scoreless, for the Shorebirds during April. He logged 14.2 innings and recorded a 3-0 record with a 1.84 ERA during that span. His three wins were the most by any Shorebirds pitcher during the opening month of the season.

He also racked up 21 strikeouts over the course of the month while allowing just 10 hits and eight walks. Cleavinger picked up wins in his first two appearances of the season, including the Shorebirds? first game on April 7 against Hagerstown. He also had at least three strikeouts in five of his six appearances out of the bullpen, including a season-high five strikeouts in three innings on two occasions (April 15 versus Hagerstown and April 19 versus Greensboro).

Cleavinger, 22, was drafted by the Orioles in the third round of the 2015 June Amateur Draft, and he currently ranks as the 26th best prospect in the Orioles system by Baseball America.

This is the first time a Shorebirds player has earned this prestigious honor from the Orioles since Donnie Hart was named Baltimore?s Minor League Pitcher of the Month for his performance in May of 2015.

I like this guy a lot.

He's cut his BB9 from 6.5 last year to 2.9 this year while maintaining his excellent K rate. He should probably be promoted to Frederick.

Both he and Meisinger deserve promotions IMO. We'll see what happens at the all-star break.

It's also worth noting Cleavinger is a lefty who dominates hitters on both sides of the plate. In working 2-3 innings on a regular basis, he sees all types of hitters and has succeeded against all of them.

Lefties are hitting .184 against him and righties are just .195.

Yeah, I think a promotion is over-due. It's not like he's 19, like Mountcastle. He's 22 and completely dominant. Imo, he should be in Frederick now - with a chance to get to Bowie by the end of the season.

June 21st is the AS Game. I'm guessing they wanted him to pitch in that. He's had some success and dominated, now it's time to get aggressive with him. College reliever that was drafted high.
