Taking a Flyer on Jason Botts?

I'd like to see Botts here, but we can't really fit him anywhere unless we dump some of our existing DH/1B logjam. And, I don't know how many trades typically happen in late April...so, I'll go out on a limb and say there is a 0.37% chance he ends up wearing black and orange.

We could easily release Millar but I don't see us doing that because of the chemistry aspect. If we don't take Botts to keep Millar for his pom poms, it will be a boneheaded move. Botts could easily out hit Millar.

The solution is easy. You drop a pitcher now. When Cintron is ready, you bring him up and move LH to Norfolk. When Bynum is ready, he replaces Torres.

So, along with your 12 pitchers, you'll have:

C- Hernandez, Quiroz

1B/DH - Botts, Millar, Huff

2B- Roberts

SS- Cintron

3B - Mora

LF - Scott

CF - Jones

RF - Markakis

OF - Payton

UT - Bynum

I just saw that we actually drafted Botts in the 28th round of the 1998 draft but he didn't sign. Instead he waited a year later and went to Texas in the 46th round. So it would be fitting in that regard if we could grab him...

Here's a thought though. Trembley doesn't favor guys who he thinks can't play defense as we've seen from Knott and J.R. House. Botts I think is average at 1B so I would hope he would play Botts and not just bench him.

I know Andy McPhail was doing guest commentary when we were playing Tampa Bay and he mentioned wanting to look for Carlos Pena type guys who maybe haven't caught on with their old teams but have the potential to break out. I think Botts would fit that.

So can we actually get this guy? Who is ahead of us on the priority list? Sadly I think Boston and New York are ahead of us, which is strange to say. Maybe we could work out a trade with the Rangers giving them Aquino and Burres for Botts and Joaquin Arias.

I've read that his defense is a real liability. Anyone heard how bad it actually is? If it's worse than Millar's I'm sure Trmebley will have nothing to do with it.

Well, it took him only 41 innings to make a couple of errors at 1B so far this year.

Fielding a cringe-worthy .964 in 2008 there.

Always heard him projected as a platoon DH. He's much more potent vs. LHP than RHP

These are the types of guys you can get for nothing instead of paying 3+ million for Millar.

This type of comment/criticism is too easy to make.

People have pounded the table for names like Phelps, Restovich and many others who have proven inadequate as major league hitters. Candidates like these are difficult to distinguish who is worth giving 300+ major league at-bats and who isn't.

While the investment $ is small, the wasted at-bats might not be unless it's a last place team. Still, no GM looks good giving ABs to guys like Restovich.

This is an excellent post. Nobody here ever pays sufficient attention to this fact. For every Jason Botts who becomes Carlos Pena there are a 100 who become Kevin Maas. It's real easy to say get this guy he could be Carlos Pena on an internet message board; it's a lot more difficult to burn through 7 of them through the course of 3 seasons before you find that guy- if you ever do.

O, btw, his defense is abysmal. I live in Arlington so I've seen a bit of this guy the last few years. IMO, he's really a poor man's Jay Gibbons. Nothing to get excited about.

Who would we cut...? Go back to a 12-man staff or would we just cut Millar?

Millar is not getting cut. I like the idea of Botts though. Texas is a team that is in desperate need of a AM type of guy. A Jason Botts should not be getting cut on a team like Texas.

Problem is, you don't know who will become Carlos Pena, and who will become Kevin Maas. Or, who will become Randy Milligan and who will become Sam Horn.

That's why it's taking a risk. Maybe he stinks, but then you just go to the next guy. We're just filling space for Teixiera anyway ;)

    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
    • The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.
