Is Tillman our #3 starter now?

I like many folks said sometime last year that Gausman was going to ascend to our ace role this year. Bundy has been a surprise, but he's starting to establish himself as a pitcher - not just a thrower. His pitch selection and execution was amazing today. Zero walks! I love me some Tilly, but in my view, he's about to become our #3 starter, and that will impact his contract rather significantly. Agreed/disagree? Is Tilly still our #1?

Tillman has been successful here for a long time. Never a true Ace, supposedly, but it'll take more than one turn through the rotation for Gausman and Bundy to supplant him. Still, I really hope they do!!! How awesome would it be to have TWO starters in our rotation better than the steady Tillman?!?

Hard to say what such a drop in the rotation would mean for Tilly's contract negotiations. If he can come back from this injury and put up the same numbers he usually has, it shouldn't cost him much $$$. No one, in Baltimore or elsewhere, was ever going to pay him True Ace money, anyway.

If Tillman comes back and pitches as well as he has in the past he will be making 16-17m next year somewhere.  Hopefully with the O's.  But he probably loses years off his contract because of the risk of injury.

That's kind of how I see it.    Tillman's been a very reliable pitcher for five years, and isn't easily supplanted.   However, we have no idea whether he'll come back in early May as scheduled, and if he does, whether he'll look like the same guy we're used to seeing.

Agreed on the lack of ace money for Tillman when contract time comes. But I think he's been viewed as a #1 starter here for years... even though his numbers suggested a strong #2 or #3. If Gas and King Kong take those spots with more typical numbers for #1's and #2's... I think that kinda unmasked Tillman for real - as a solid mid-rotation guy. That means he might not crack the $10 million/year mark, IMO.

Fair point - who knows what's actually going on right now with him. Hopefully it's just some light fraying that'll heal up quickly. I would sure like to see him back the rotation asap. Even then... if he pitches to his normal Tilly standards... I dunno. This feels like a weird turning-point in his career. He may have peaked. That doesn't mean he can't stay productive for us for several more years, of course.

I like to say Gerrit Cole (Pirates) has ace stuff with the mentality of a #5.  Tillman has high #3, low #2 with the mentality of an ace.  If healthy he is still the stopper, the leader, and the guy you expect to pitch well in big spots.  The other two are quickly ascending the the stuff side of the spectrum.  Still gotta see the mind set.  Gausman showed us he is capable in NY last year.

I agree.  I have a bad feeling about this.  I really hope he's able to pitch.

Injury.  PRP injections.  No surgery.  Extension talks(maybe we were trying to get him on the cheap knowing he'd be out a year)  Starts a program and then has a setback.  4/15 now sometime in May.  10 depth SP's acquired.

The Orioles FO could be letting the fans down gently on this one.  With attendance down last year it would be a huge negative PR blow for the team.

I hope he pitches, and pitches well, in May-October, but I'm scared.

    • Not that I am in any way full agreement, but this is a classic post.  Doesn't Machado play chess?  Maybe we could get some chess boards in the clubhouse and junk all the legos.  Not all great baseball men are John McGraw bad asses.  Some can be Christy Mathewsons as well, I suppose.  Not that I imagine today's young players much resembling McGraw or Mathewson, but they are the first two contrasting old school types that come to mind.  I will say just based on his postseason alone I'd much rather have Tatis over Machado.
    • Well I refuse to believe that only the O's have no players that want extensions.
    • Customer advocate groups have tried for decades to force the cable companies to allow channel by channel (a la carte) subscriptions, but the cable companies fought this because it would result in far less revenue (than forcing us to pay for a hundred channels we don't watch).  The government refused to intervene, so we've been stuck with the existing business model for all this time.  Streaming is forcing the change because streaming -- for now -- is an a la carte model.   MLB's fear must be this: if the regional sports network cable channel model goes away, will most users pay anywhere close to what these channels made as part of a cable bundle for just one streaming channel where all you watch are Orioles games (or maybe Orioles and Nats games -- whatever the case may be)?  So if you pay $100/month for cable with MASN, you are probably watching at least a few other channels too.  But will you pay $15/month (or whatever the price may be) just to watch the Orioles -- even during the months when there is no baseball?  The existing basic cable model has been quite stable because people tend to watch at least 5 or 6 channels.  They're reluctant to cancel their whole cable package just because baseball season is over -- or they've been too busy to watch many games this season.  But with a single streaming channel of just baseball there is bound to be a far more unstable revenue base.  All the streaming channels are already dealing with this problem.  I think MLB is maybe reluctant to go all in on streaming for this reason.  Perhaps they're looking for new different model that could allow them to bundle individual team channels with Netflix, or Prime, or maybe with your cell phone plan or something else.  This could give them some stability, but it could also be a turn off for the more hardcore fans who just want the Orioles and little else.  It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out and if MLB, and the Orioles, will prosper or suffer as a result.
    • What if they don’t want to be extended?
    • I don't want the O's to lose much, but I do want there to be a massive streaming deal with Amazon or some other company the O's are left out of.  This blackout nonsense is bullsh!t. 🤬
