Craig Gentry Reactionary Thread

I know Gentry is playing well, but he's 33 years old and has slashed.222/.290/.263/.553 in 353 PAs at the major league level since 2014. In 2015 he slashed .256/.319/.327/.646 in 446 PAs in the PCL league.

So we have 799 PAs at AAA and the major leagues where he hasn't hit much. I think I'm going to give that a little more weight than 35 spring training PAs where he has just two extra base hits (grant it they were bother homers) and has struck out eight times to four walks.

Tony, I think the question is:   "Is Gentry well?"     He had the concussion at the end of the 2014 season and he hasn't done well since.   Just look at this collision.  http://m.mlb.com/news/article/94080352/as-john-jaso-craig-gentry-feeling-effects-of-concussions/

If he returns to the guy he was in 2012-2013 then the O's may have someone that can really help them. May someone that get on base at a .360 OBP.

I am not saying he will stay healthy all year.  He is injury  prone.  But he can play at a high level for a while when healthy.

Perhaps, but I just don't know a whole lot of 33-year old suddenly getting it again, regardless of injury or not. I'd rather keep Santander.

Since Santander can't play in the field yet, he'll surely start the season on the DL (especially if the MRI on his elbow isn't that great) and might stay there for awhile. That would allow Gentry and his superior defense the opportunity to make the club and show what he can do.

Wildcard would have liked Craig's short afternoon at Bradenton.  He made a nice running save on a wind blown double to the RC gap, turned and fired.  Then he hit a wind-aided double of his own to RF off a LH.  As a stopgap, he looks decent in this SSS.

What else can I put on the front page?

First, let's see if he can hit LHP's.   That will be his role to start the season IF he even makes the team.

He has a career .350 OBP v LHP. That and his plus glove will be a big boost as aplatoon in RF if he's healthy. It sure looks like he is.

We'd have to sift through the Game Thread with scOtt talking about Rolling Rock beer, etc.  ;-)

Rickard's bunt with 2 out to score a run from third, TMan's dinger, Verrett's poor outing, Ynoa, Nunyo, Cedric's K on high heat...

I think Gentry is  a lock, or pretty close to it. He fits the team better than Bourn due to his RH bat, an he plays much better defense. I think Santander goes to the DL, and our 5 outfielders are Jones, Smith, Kim, Joey and Gentry.

I don't know much about his history, but wasn't Gentry hurt a lot the last couple of years?    I don't know if he'll hit as well as he has this spring, but he's a really good defender and may make the team on that basis alone.

I'm still going to give him 4-5 more starts to prove he isn't David Lough Part Deux.  But it would certainly be in Gentry's interest to start showing a pulse at the plate.  Even "defensive specialists" need to get hits every once in a while.

That may be an insult to David Lough, who was 28 when we traded for him and coming off a 2+ rWAR, .700+ OPS season in which he received ROY votes. Gentry is 33, hasn't OPSed close to .700 since 2013 and hasn't posted positive overall value since 2014. Despite Gentry's defensive abilities I haven't ever really understood the desire to keep him. With Bourn back for the defensive replacement role if they really want one, Mancini looking good so far, and Rickard unlikely to stay on the DL for very long, I suspect he won't be on the MLB roster much longer.

    • I honestly think there is very little difference in most the teams that made the playoffs.  The most wins was 98 wins and there was 12 teams with 86 wins or more.  It also seems that many of the teams are on the same page with scouting and analytics now hitting wise.  Years back you had moneyball which the A’s used before anyone else.  Then the Astros and few teams started with analytics and seemed to be ahead of the rest of the league but they have caught up now imo.  Now the move seems to be on launch angle and hitting homers by getting the ball in the air but that seems to be across the league.  Obviously some teams have more money and more talented players but the strategy seems about the same.  The main differences I see is in pitching in the playoffs which is bullpen games and using openers rather then a starter to go 7 innings and carry your team to win now a slight sign of trouble they are taking them out.  With all these short inning guys and pitching them in certain pockets we are seeing very little offense and the hitting with runners in scoring position has been awful.  It all comes down to RISP at bats and getting 1 or 2 big base hits in those situations.  We just haven’t been able to get those hits so far in short series.
    • And we've seen similar with Kjerstad. Kjerstad might be the best pure hitting prospect in the Orioles system of recent years besides Gunnar. I want to see him playing everyday next year is possible none of this sitting him versus LHP more often than not. These prospects need to get their reps and stop treating them like John Lowenstein and Benny Ayala.
    • I don’t see Elias trading off prospects anymore at least top guys.  We have moved a few guys in last year and I expect they try to build that back up.  They should have money to use if they want to add talent.
    • Blah, well Rob Manfred has to be happy along with Fox network. A Yankees-Mets World Series match up is still on the table and the Dodgers as well if they win tomorrow. I knew the Royals would get jettisoned by the Yankees without too much of a fight.
    • For Mountcastle …Maybe Chase Petty and Tristan Smith?
    • I’m guessing they ask for Mayo or Basallo of Kjerstad. For me …I’d give them Kjerstad since he’s defensively challenged IMO. Maybe Kjerstad, McDermott, Beavers, and O’Ferrall?
    • 192 wins in two seasons is a pretty strong argument to stay the course.  That said, I wonder if the young players wouldn't be better off long-term if the scientific matchups took a back seat to the raw talent a little more than we've seen.  Overthinking something can be a thing you know.
