Have the O's figured out how to make Miley a winner?

Why would Miley become a FA and then resign with the O's?   Do you think he would resign to play in Camden Yard when he could probably get the same money to play is a larger park?

And if  he pitches well over the next 5 weeks his numbers will get better.   Then maybe he can get a multi year deal.  The O's probably only would want him for one year with Harvey coming in 2019.

If the Orioles offer $6MM and that is the top offer -- or only offer -- he'll re-sign.

I think he'll need to pitch far better than at any time during his tenure with the Orioles to be offered a multi-year deal by any club. Exception: a team signs him to a 3-year contract as a LOOGY (which they would tell him about in advance).

What is a starter that is 11-11,  4.59 ERA,  32 starts, 164 IP worth to the O's.  That is  what Miley will be if he keeps pitching as well as he has for the last month.     Can the O's pick up a better starter off the FA market for 12m?   They may only need him for another year with Harvey  possibly ready for 2019.

In the past Dan has had to pay 50m for 4 years to get a mediocre Jimenez from Free Agency and it cost him a first round draft choice to boot.  The O's sign FA Gallardo 2/22m but traded him after paying him 1/11m.  He was not a good starter for them.   If Dan trades he has to give up someone of value from the minors.    its hard to find starters when your home park is known for giving up cheap homers.

Bundy, Gausman and Castro can probably go deep in games.  Tillman may or may not be able to strengthen his arm this off season and return to the form he had in his good years.  But we know Tillman will give it his best shot and he live in Sarasota right next to the O's rehab facilities.  Miley may only be a 5 inning pitcher but he will pitch 32 games most years.

I am not saying Miley will have another month like August but  if he does I am wondering  whether the O's see him as a fit for the rotation for another year.

As I said, the main reason to do it would be that there wouldn't be a commitment beyond 2018.

His next start comes after call ups. Just get him out of there ASAP every start. If you can get 5 plus great.

It isn't impossible he comes back. I just see the team and Wade both looking for a fresh start but who knows

About the walks: Don't we complain because Gausman and Tillman get in bad counts so they groove one and give up homeruns? Miley at least is willing to throw it at the knees and take the chance of missing. The walk is better than a big hit.

That's what I heard in his third walk yesterday.  Maybe some walks are pure wildness, but he had a lot of success at the beginning of the season when his walks were highest.

His August stats are:    3-1,   2.60 ERA,   5 starts,  27.2 IP,  24 H,  .238 avg,    26 SO,  16 BB, 1.45 WHIP.

WHIP  and walks  look high but the rest of the numbers look good.

Dempsey says the curve is the key.   I think not trying to make him go 6 innings every start helps.

If he can do this through the rest of the season do the O's pick up his 12m option?

No. Score a bunch of runs and take him out after five?

Yes.

Depends on what the pen looks like & who else we sign. If we get a 3rd sp who can consistently go 6 then we can afford Miley's bullpen burning outings. Castro may not be there to save so many outings, we need to find a replacement for him if he goes into the rotation but a long man may be more important to the O's than the 5th starter. Seriously.

They're paid a ton of money to locate pitches. There should be complaints about FBs down the middle & about walks. Walks are ridiculous. Hitting a baseball isn't easy, make them hit it. Bridwell gets hit, Edwin Jackson gets hit....they get outs. There is no argument for the walks.

    • And we've seen similar with Kjerstad. Kjerstad might be the best pure hitting prospect in the Orioles system of recent years besides Gunnar. I want to see him playing everyday next year is possible none of this sitting him versus LHP more often than not. These prospects need to get their reps and stop treating them like John Lowenstein and Benny Ayala.
    • I don’t see Elias trading off prospects anymore at least top guys.  We have moved a few guys in last year and I expect they try to build that back up.  They should have money to use if they want to add talent.
    • Blah, well Rob Manfred has to be happy along with Fox network. A Yankees-Mets World Series match up is still on the table and the Dodgers as well if they win tomorrow. I knew the Royals would get jettisoned by the Yankees without too much of a fight.
    • For Mountcastle …Maybe Chase Petty and Tristan Smith?
    • I’m guessing they ask for Mayo or Basallo of Kjerstad. For me …I’d give them Kjerstad since he’s defensively challenged IMO. Maybe Kjerstad, McDermott, Beavers, and O’Ferrall?
    • 192 wins in two seasons is a pretty strong argument to stay the course.  That said, I wonder if the young players wouldn't be better off long-term if the scientific matchups took a back seat to the raw talent a little more than we've seen.  Overthinking something can be a thing you know.
