Assuming we trade Manny, who's our target for 3B?

I'm going with this guy...after Manny is traded to Chicago for a package centered around Candelario and pitching. If Beckham isn't in their long term plans then I'm sure Baez could be had as well.

Jeimer Candelario, Cubs
No player on this list is more in need of a trade than Candelario, who's blocked by Kris Bryant at third base and Anthony Rizzo at first base. Candelario has the bat to start for several clubs, as he's a switch-hitter who makes repeated contact, drives the ball and takes a lot of walks.

Candeleario was traded to Detroit on 7/31/17.

Whoops!

Then revisit a trade with the Astros. Centered around bregman and othe prospects.

I'm confused as to why people think Houston would want to trade Bregman for a year of Manny Machado.  Am I missing something?

Edit:  a year of Manny Machado as well as young pitching prospects.  It doesn't add up for me.

I think people still think Bregman is unproven, they missed him having a similar season to Manny this year.  The Astros wouldn't do that if we paid Manny's salary for 2018 as part of the deal.  The Red Sox are probably the best fit for a Machado trade (As much as it sucks to think of Manny in Boston).  Groome, Chavis, and a throw-in for Manny would be a good return for one season.

With Devers absolutely killing it from day 1, I kind of doubt they're looking to pay a big prospect haul to send him to the bench.

Agreed, unless they wanted to move bogaerts to second and stick Manny at SS.  Or move Devers to first, where I think he'll ultimately end up in a few years when he puts on more weight, and keep Manny at third. Either way, Machado on that team would be scary and absolutely excruciating.  And I wonder how he'd feel about it, being that he hates them too.

If.  If we trade Manny.  Ozzie Albies/ Dansby Swanson?

Imagine if the left side of the infield is the 1-1 club.

It's funny - everyone's talks in reverence of Swanson, but Albies is the almost sure superstar of the 2, imo.  I think the Braves could be talked into trading Swanson - especially since Johan Comargo - their jack of all trades infielder - might end up being a lot better than people realize.  No chance the Braves trade Albies, imo.

If we do trade Manny I feel much better about us just getting the best possible prospects back (regardless of position) now that we have Beckham in the fold. Before I thought we need to get a SS and/or 3B in return, which would really limit our potential trading partners.  Not so much anymore.

When we suggest possible trading partners for Manny, maybe we should focus on the teams that have the money to legitimately sign him long term. In my mind it boils down to the Dodgers and Cubs, because I don't see any scenario where Angelos signs off on trading Manny to the Yankees or Red Sox. And the Angels might be a sleeper candidate. I could also seee the Mets doing something stupid like trading for Manny (then letting him walk) because they're such an inept organization.

Chris Johnson for a one year deal until Mountcastle is ready.

So you're suggesting punting the season? Chris Johnson struggles to start at AAA.

I can't believe the folks here that are ready to buy into any prospect we have as a sure thing. Mountacastle showed some promise this year, but the's years away.

One player who I think was left out of the discussion is Eduardo Nunez.  Pardons if someone brought him up.   He's had his best offensive year this season at age 30 - especially since Boston got him, but he's still got speed and versatility to be useful for another few years - and shouldn't be too expensive - considering he was signed for a 1 year 4 mil contract last offseason.

Here's the FA list:

Yunel Escobar (35, .736 career OPS)

Ryan Flaherty (31, .641)

Todd Frazier (32, .778)

Mike Moustakas (29, .730)

Trevor Plouffe (32, .711)

Danny Valencia (33, .744)

Moustakas' .730 OPS is misleading; he's had an .829 OPS over the last 3 seasons.  He, Escobar and Frazier are the only three names on this list who are really viable as starters.

I think I might be tempted to go with Escobar on a short deal, to buy time to figure out if Mountcastle will stick as a 3B.

For what it's worth the 2019 FA class isn't much better.

Beltre

Headley

Pearce (can he really play 3b)?

Donaldson

Middlebrooks

Dominguez

So what this tells me is that Manny will basically wait for Donaldson to sign then ask for almost double his salary.

    • ???. Cowser took more swings against LF than any other LH hitter on the team ( not named  Henderson). He was one of the guys they did not platoon.
    • I think Kevin Seiyltzer was the fall guy for a team that thought they were a championship team.  This guy has overseen more a decade of hitting in Atlanta, has been through developing and helping young batters succeed when the league adjusts.  Most importantly, he has a ring!
    • Glad one poseur AL team is out.  I hope CLE wins and knocks the other one out tomorrow.
    • I honestly think there is very little difference in most the teams that made the playoffs.  The most wins was 98 wins and there was 12 teams with 86 wins or more.  It also seems that many of the teams are on the same page with scouting and analytics now hitting wise.  Years back you had moneyball which the A’s used before anyone else.  Then the Astros and few teams started with analytics and seemed to be ahead of the rest of the league but they have caught up now imo.  Now the move seems to be on launch angle and hitting homers by getting the ball in the air but that seems to be across the league.  Obviously some teams have more money and more talented players but the strategy seems about the same.  The main differences I see is in pitching in the playoffs which is bullpen games and using openers rather then a starter to go 7 innings and carry your team to win now a slight sign of trouble they are taking them out.  With all these short inning guys and pitching them in certain pockets we are seeing very little offense and the hitting with runners in scoring position has been awful.  It all comes down to RISP at bats and getting 1 or 2 big base hits in those situations.  We just haven’t been able to get those hits so far in short series.
    • And we've seen similar with Kjerstad. Kjerstad might be the best pure hitting prospect in the Orioles system of recent years besides Gunnar. I want to see him playing everyday next year is possible none of this sitting him versus LHP more often than not. These prospects need to get their reps and stop treating them like John Lowenstein and Benny Ayala.
    • I don’t see Elias trading off prospects anymore at least top guys.  We have moved a few guys in last year and I expect they try to build that back up.  They should have money to use if they want to add talent.
    • Blah, well Rob Manfred has to be happy along with Fox network. A Yankees-Mets World Series match up is still on the table and the Dodgers as well if they win tomorrow. I knew the Royals would get jettisoned by the Yankees without too much of a fight.
