Assuming we trade Manny, who's our target for 3B?

I don't think O's will have a choice if Manny goes.. & why wouldn't he? O's certainly not serious about WS championship...clear by the lack of interest in good pitching & clear organization not willing to spend money on building a championship ..they have been burnt by Davis's complete bust. Went on a limb for Ubaldo another bust.. Trumbo not much better. So why should these players stick around.. There is no clutch or playing inspired ball.. what about Buck getting the boot? Should build around Schoop, Mancini, Beckmann, Gentry, Smith, Gausman & Bundy.. this Hays kid looks good.. can't be much worst than what's happing on the field now...

I've read a lot of things on this board, but "the Orioles should build around Gentry" has got to be a first.

So you're suggesting punting the season? Chris Johnson struggles to start at AAA.

I can't believe the folks here that are ready to buy into any prospect we have as a sure thing. Mountacastle showed some promise this year, but the's years away.

.301/.330/.506 in limited time due to injury. Former productive major leaguer. Stop gap for a year.

And, if you trade Manny, that's pretty much a punt already. Johnson is a reasonable, low cost, low risk, short-term option.

I don't even know how to react to that, he's AAAA depth at best.  If the O's are building around Gentry, then they should be building around Chris Dickerson too because he's a better player.  IMO, the only reason Gentry is on the team is because he's Buck's buddy,  maybe he can transition to coaching.

We should all just get prepared for Machado not being traded, signing a huge FA deal with another team after 2018 and the O's receiving nothing but a compensation pick in return. I'll be shocked if there's any other outcome given this team's history under Angelos.

Me too.   In fact, I won't even be disappointed when that happens, because it's been foreshadowed for years.    Rather, I'll be pleasantly surprised if he's traded for a good return.

Yep, the writing has been on the wall for awhile now.

I'd be absolutely floored if they lock him up this offseason.  They've got a lot of money coming off the books, maybe this is what they've been waiting for.

Now if they don't lock up Manny, they better focus on Schoop.

In regards to the names that have been bandied about in this thread, there's no one to really get excited about.

What would be more depressing, Manny playing his last home game as an Orioles this weekend vs the Rays, him walking next year for a draft pick? Ugh. It will be painful for him to leave either way, but I know the rational thing is to get a big return for him now.

Johnson's last productive MLB season was 2013. Installing him as a starter is essentially throwing up the white flag and saying "we're trying to finish last."

Ok ok .. not Gentry .. maybe just thinking of speed.. & I know not as many @ bats but hell of a better average  than Davis or Trumbo .. puts bat on ball better than just looking @ strike 3  90% of the time.

If the Orioles wanted to give Gentry his bench position back that'd be just fine. He's a good fit there, and he's certainly be a nice little piece to have in 2017. But he's not a regular player. And he's 33.

    • ???. Cowser took more swings against LF than any other LH hitter on the team ( not named  Henderson). He was one of the guys they did not platoon.
    • I think Kevin Seiyltzer was the fall guy for a team that thought they were a championship team.  This guy has overseen more a decade of hitting in Atlanta, has been through developing and helping young batters succeed when the league adjusts.  Most importantly, he has a ring!
    • Glad one poseur AL team is out.  I hope CLE wins and knocks the other one out tomorrow.
    • I honestly think there is very little difference in most the teams that made the playoffs.  The most wins was 98 wins and there was 12 teams with 86 wins or more.  It also seems that many of the teams are on the same page with scouting and analytics now hitting wise.  Years back you had moneyball which the A’s used before anyone else.  Then the Astros and few teams started with analytics and seemed to be ahead of the rest of the league but they have caught up now imo.  Now the move seems to be on launch angle and hitting homers by getting the ball in the air but that seems to be across the league.  Obviously some teams have more money and more talented players but the strategy seems about the same.  The main differences I see is in pitching in the playoffs which is bullpen games and using openers rather then a starter to go 7 innings and carry your team to win now a slight sign of trouble they are taking them out.  With all these short inning guys and pitching them in certain pockets we are seeing very little offense and the hitting with runners in scoring position has been awful.  It all comes down to RISP at bats and getting 1 or 2 big base hits in those situations.  We just haven’t been able to get those hits so far in short series.
    • And we've seen similar with Kjerstad. Kjerstad might be the best pure hitting prospect in the Orioles system of recent years besides Gunnar. I want to see him playing everyday next year is possible none of this sitting him versus LHP more often than not. These prospects need to get their reps and stop treating them like John Lowenstein and Benny Ayala.
    • I don’t see Elias trading off prospects anymore at least top guys.  We have moved a few guys in last year and I expect they try to build that back up.  They should have money to use if they want to add talent.
    • Blah, well Rob Manfred has to be happy along with Fox network. A Yankees-Mets World Series match up is still on the table and the Dodgers as well if they win tomorrow. I knew the Royals would get jettisoned by the Yankees without too much of a fight.
