This thread should have been called should we have drafted Mike Trout when available.  It would have just as much relevance.

But the short answer is of course, based on what we know after the fact...is over the winter last year you probably could have gotten good value.  As soon as he showed signs of disrepair, he was not bringing back the value we wanted this year.  At this point we have to hope he gets healthy and they can revisit.

I don't recall anyone clamoring to pick Trout during the draft thread that year.

Folks did advocate trading Britton last offseason.

So I'm not really sure how apt your comparison is.

A poll based on events that cant be changed.  Or as someone else said above, its crying over spilt milk.  I would have traded him for a haul last winter or at the break.  There is a question as to what he could have returned.  For example, I would have traded him for two top 100 prospects.  But I don't think anything close to that was offered.  And the poll doesn't allow for that difference.

And to be more specific, there is no one I wouldn't trade for the right deal.  But to poll based on trade or no trade without any consideration of what you are trading is really asking for confirmation that we shoulda done something before he was hurt.

Well, duh.

The larger question is not whether a trade of Zach, or this guy or that guy is going to make a difference, but whether or not this organization realizes that the window on this 5 year run group is closed and the problem is more than just a few cheap fixes are going to correct and that they must get a new GM and commit to a true rebuild.   They won't because of Dan and Buck being in the last year of their deals and thus, unfortunately, we are likely going to spend another number of seasons back down amongst the have-nots either in the basement or as non contenders before a future owner is likely forced to do what they should have started doing last offseason.

I was in favor of at least seeing what other teams would offer up for Britton.  O's can develop relievers, they find a new guy every year who is effective in the bullpen.

Most relievers are elite for a few years, but very few have Mariano Rivera like careers.  Or they get hurt like Zach did this year.

Gotta non-tender him at this point.  Maybe bring him back cheaper.

I'm gonna say "I told you so" on this one (not you specifically AVD just in general).  Just feel like being petty.

I don't think he can be moved.  So, non-tender.  And a tremendous opportunity wasted.

The Yankees did the right thing.  And, perhaps, the wrong thing by resigning Chapman later.  But anyway, they were smarter.

    • At cost considerations there is 2 players i'd rather have listed in that article over Crochet, Helsley leading that. Also Mountcastle to the Reds for a SP makes a lot of sense also.
    • Guilty. I'm working to be intentional to enjoy the day to day of a lot of exciting careers beginning, and not miss the moment as during say Peyton Manning's career in a different chapter of life when assured 14-2 or 13-3 seasons were four months of boredom while you waited to see what the playoff stumble would be this time.    SIGBOT's stuff works in the regular season same as Billy Beane's didn't in the playoffs. I don't follow Over/Unders, but would guess the 2025 Orioles are 1st or 2nd in the AL on early action.    My informal AL power rankings end of 2024: 1. A nonexistent Orioles team with a functional Adley Rutschman 2. Yankees with Soto 3. Tie between actual Orioles with broken Adley and end stage Astros that lost several series to hot Central teams 4. Yankees without Soto 5. Central I'm cheating Cleveland there for a joke, and hope they win, which they are plenty capable of doing.    It is an interesting matchup for the stuff the two teams are good at being very different.
    • I don't see the O's trading Mullins without getting a replacement for him from somewhere.  It's doubtful we have anyone in the minors yet ready to step in for him.  Maybe the same for Urias since he's the perfect backup infielder.  I think Mateo and Mountcastle are more likely to be traded.
    • I was clearly talking about the AL...
    • You mean like how the Os dealt guys like Hays, Stowers and Norby?  Yea, guys who are good depth but guys we can stand to trade are guys I want to trade….and obviously Elias feels similarly. These guys carry value. The level of value depends on the player and you can debate the value of return but yes, you absolutely should trade out of depth and trade guys that perhaps that don’t match your team philosophies.  That’s what teams do.
    • Who knows.  Lots of possibilities. There could be another trade like the Hays trade.  Or maybe you can get a ML ready arm that profiles as a high end reliever. I don’t think that you will get a proven lock down guy but that doesn’t mean you can’t get someone that will end up a big contributor.
