In the bottom of the 6th inning, Gausman struck out 3 straight batters on 9 consecutive pitches.

He started Garcia out with a ball, but then K'd him on 3 straight pitches.

He then K'd the next 2 batters on 6 pitches.

And ........ he did of all that with runners on 2nd and 3rd base, and nobody out.

Very nice outing that shouldn’t get lost in the angst about last night’s late-inning loss.   I didn’t think Gausman was at his best, but he did what he needed to do against a weak Chicago lineup.

Have no idea for sure, but I think it’s possible the attack mode / killer instinct is eroded when he has a lead. I think that mentality helps him and when he somewhat lets off the gas (not referring to velocity), he suffers for it. .

Edit: could also be tipping his pitches or signals are being stolen. I haven’t really looked at the game much today, just checked the box score.

He teases you with an outing where he looks like the second coming of Palmer and the next game looks like trash. Maybe it's coaching? Maybe he's a head case? If you look at his lifetime record, 37-47 isn't exactly awe inspiring.

Id rather have Palmer pitching, even in his 70's
