Buck gave his reason here: http://www.masnsports.com/school-of-roch/2018/04/showalter-on-cobb-trumbo-leadoff-spot-and-more.html.   Basically, if he pinch hits for Rasmus as an OF, he may need to make two moves - one to pinch hit, the second to sub on defense.   At DH it’s only one move.   Personally I think that’s a very weak justification.

That's actually a decent justification, IMO.  Rasmus is garbage at the plate so he's obviously going to be a candidate for a pinch hitter in a close game.

Why does Buck keep doing this?  Is Mancini really better than Rasmus or Santander in LF?  Is Rasmus a little hurt?  Does Mancini not like to DH?  What gives?

Seems like to me we could be rotating guys through the DH spot while we have the chance. Put the best defensive lineup out there and give some guys a day off in the field at least.

I’m glad we won but I wish the beat reporters would find this out.

Why isn't a win enough for you? I couldn't care less where Buck plays his guys. I don't care if Mancini is at 1st, LF or DH.

I would think it helps Rasmus make it through the year healthy if he DHs sometimes.  He has been good when healthy.

Colby Rasmus has NEVER been good.

Makes sense to me honestly. Add in the fact that Rasmus has a weaker arm than Santander and is not significantly better defensively, and it makes some sense.

I think we’re really talking about Mancini, not Santander.   My problem with it is I’d rather have the better defender out there for the first 6-7 innings than worry about the hypothetical possibility of needing to make a double move sometime in the last three innings.   The issue may never come up, and even if it does, we’ve got enough guys on the bench to pull off the double move if needed.

Buck is playing the long game. Mancini is going to be a very important part of this team for years to come, but he is blocked by Davis and Trumbo. If he is going to stick in the OF, he might as well get reps early in the season.

What Buck should do is take Davis out any time we have a lead, with Mancini to 1B and Gentry/Rasmus to LF.

Mancini's biggest problem in left is athleticism, that won't improve with reps.

That may be his biggest problem, but I do believe his overall fielding should improve with experience.   He improved significantly over the course of last season IMO.

Ok, but I don't think it's hypothetical. Rasmus is the only guy you are going to pinch hit for if the Yankees bring in a left-hander. It doesn't necessarily mean they have t do a double move or something. Santander switch hits and Mancini is batting against everyone, so why not DH Rasmus so you can use Valencia late in the game if the Yankees bring in a lefty. At this point in his career, I don't think Rasmus is that much better of a defender wherever he plays.

I haven’t seen enough of Rasmus this year to say for sure how much of a defensive advantage he has over Mancini or Santander.   I guess my reaction is that if he’s not substantially better, I don’t know why he’s on the team.   For a pure LH DH, I’d rather go with Pedro Alvarez (even though he’s a slow starter).    But I do think Rasmus probably is substantially better on defense than Mancini, and noticeably better than Santander.

When I said “hypothetical,” what I meant is the pinch hit situation really only comes up in certain situations where the game is close and the Yankees are playing match-up.

Sure, his upside out there is probably Steve Pearce. But we should not forget that Mancini was thrown into the OF without playing there in the minors. I have to think he will get better the longer he is out there, even if he maxes out at 0 dWAR.

Then why DH him in the first place?  I'd rather see Pedro DHing, than Rasmus.
