We all know that 1988 started 0-21.  The 2018 birds started 6-15 to take a commanding 6 game lead over their 1988 counterparts.  However, the 1988 team fought back,  and went 14-21 over the next 35 games to climb with 3 games of the 2018 team who have gone 11-24 over that same stretch of games.

1988 14-42
2018 17-39

2018's lead has shrunk to 2 games over the 1988 squad.
2018 19-45
1988 17-47

In 2017, after 64 games the Orioles were 32-32.  Since then they are 62-100.  A 17-12 August last season, put the Orioles 2 games over .500.  After that it's been 26-66 .283.

It's mind-boggling that they have played this poorly for so long.  Don't tell me you knew it was going to be this bad because that's total Barbra Streisand.

On any other team changes would have been made by now.  Managers fired, coaches let go, players DFA, trades made.  The Orioles just don't do anything.

Lets hope they are determined to get #1 pick, that's the best outcome for this season

Can we add the 2003 Detroit Tigers to the tracker?

As far as I know that is the worst record for any team that played the full 162.

Through 64 games the 2003 Tigers were 16-48.

The '62 Mets played 160 games, but yeah, Detroit has the worst 162 game mark.  They drafted Verlander the next year, 2nd overall (that was when draft picks alternated back and forth between leagues).

BTW, 2004 was also the year Flanagan and Beattie wanted to draft either Chris Nelson or Stephen Drew at SS.  At the very last moment, in the draft room, Angelos demanded they draft a college pitcher (at slot money, no more) and so we got...... Wade Townsend, 8th overall.  Townsend was later ruled ineligible and went back into the 2005 draft.  In 2005, the Orioles used the comp pick for Garrett Olson.  Andy MacPhail did what he loved to do, trade with the Cubs, and in 2009 dealt Olson (and Henry Williamson) for Felix Pie.  Three seasons in Baltimore, Pie had an OPS+ of 85 (which blows away his 56 OPS+ the 2 years prior in Chicago).

In the modern era (1901 - Present), the top/bottom 3 are the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics (36-117 with one rainout), the 1935 Boston Braves (38-115 with one rainout), and the 1962 Mets (40-120 with 2 rainouts.)

Those are good (bad) for .235, .248, and .250 winning percentages, respectively.

Going all the way back to 1876 (the birth of the National League), the 1899 Cleveland Spiders went 20-134 (a .130 winning percentage.)

And this is all pre sell off. We need to just burn it down. Don’t try and get guys close to the majors. This won’t be fast. We need a five year plan, three #1 picks, trade for a bunch of “high end” guys in A ball, sign players in the carribean, and hope it only takes 5 years.

Oh and you probably shouldn’t be reaching for a position of “need” with your 2nd pick in the draft, because have you seen the team, the whole roster is a position of need.

I must be really bored so I went further into the comparisons.  After the 0-21 start, the next longest losing streaks were 5 (2X) and 4 (6X).  Already this year, there have been losing streaks of 7 (3X), 6, and 5 (2X).

Get to the point, Soprano.
O.K. after going 0-21, the 1988 squad went 54-86 the rest of the way, .415 baseball.
Notably, from June-August the 1988 team went 35-47 .427 before again collapsing to an 8-21 finish, including dropping 8 of the last 9.

Fast forward 30 years, since last September, 26-69 .274.  Just to match the June-August .427 mark, the team still needs to go 32-36 .471 for the next 10 weeks.

The bottom line is unless this team regains its footing and plays at a pace that it hasn't done since last August, the gap between 1988 and 2018 is going to grow and not in a good way. The 1988 team is going to start looking more like the better squad of the two.

Have a nice summer!
