Believe it or not, in the last 10 games, the Orioles have had 9 quality starts, and for that effort, they are 2-8.  The starters are 2-6 with 2 no decisions in the last 10.

5/29 Bundy 6 IP, 3 ER, L
5/30 Hess 6 IP, 1 ER, L
6/1 Cashner 6 IP, 3 ER, L
6/2 Gausman 5.1 IP, 5 ER, L
6/5 Cobb 6 IP, 1 ER, W
6/6 Bundy 7 IP, 0 ER, W
6/7 Hess 6 IP, 1 ER, ND
6/8 Cashner 6 IP, 3 ER, L
6/9 Gausman 6.2 IP, 3 ER, ND

Good post. I was thinking the same thing. We would’ve killed for this in 2016. The offense is terrible. The bullpen has choked any close game away this year as well.

This year is like bizzarro world Orioles of the last 6 years.  Outside of Tillman/Wright, decent starting pitching.  Bad bullpen. Terrible defense. Below average HRs.

The bad OBP is consistent though with previous years, but coupled with the drop in power, terrible offense.

The bullpen hasn’t been that bad.

For the season, the BP ERA is 4.31, 23rd in MLB.  Last year it was 3.93, 12th.  In 2016, it was 3.40, 3rd.  In 2 seasons, the BP has added almost a run to their ERA.

For the season, these 5 have 30 QS, just under 1/3 of those in the last 10 games.

Bundy 13 GS, 8 Q
Cashner 13 GS, 6 Q
Cobb 10 GS, 5 Q
Gausman 13 GS, 7 Q
Hess 5 GS, 4 Q

Also, Cobb may well have had a 6th Quality start, but his 5.67 Innings/3 ER start against the D-Rays on May 12th was aborted by a rain delay.

He was only at 68 pitches at that point.

That was also the game in which Trey Mancini misplayed a catchable ball into a triple, leading to one of the Earned Runs charged to Cobb that afternoon.

Solid starting pitching usually goes a long way towards assuring a team of (at least) a solid, winning season ........ but the Orioles' horrible offense and bad defense have made this team an exception to that (general) rule.

One would argue some of the problem is the workload.  However, the BP is on pace to pitch 564 innings this year, which is down roughly 5% from 595 in 2017, but it's 2 full games more than 2016, 546 innings.

Factoring into that pace are early season starts from Tillman and Cobb , and a zero inning start from Bundy. I think the BP innings could end up very close to the 546 number from 2016 by the end of the season.

It's almost unfathomable that a team can get decent to good consistent starting pitching as we have for the past month or so, but be losing at the rate we are.

I've never seen anything like it.

You haven't been watching the Mets ???

In the Mets' last 9 games, their starting pitchers have an ERA of 1.93.

In that span, their overall record is 1-8.

The only game that they won in that span was last night, against Luis Severino and the Yankees.

What's even more amazing about the starting pitching is that it's doing what it's doing while backed by the league's worst defense.  What's even more amazing about the league's worst defense is that it's also the league's 2nd-worst offense.  It's actually pretty hard to be that bad at both of those things at the same time, but that's what happens when you have like 7 "designated hitters" that can't actually hit and also they're all over the field.  Who constructed this roster?  I hope they don't work on bridges and roads.
