O's switch radio stations in DC

Oriole radio broadcasts will now be on AM 630 in DC instead of AM 980.

This could be of interest to some people who live outside the local area.   Obviously in Baltimore the Orioles are on FM 105.7 and FM stations don't carry more than 70 or 80 miles.   And the MD/VA/Del/WV/soPA/noNC area is dotted with smaller affiliate stations that cover small zones.

AM stations can carry for hundreds and hundreds of miles at night, depending on whether there is a closer station at near the same frequency.   AM 980 does not have that strong a signal, AM 630 is stronger.   It might enable O's games to be heard over a wider area, like they used to be when they were on strong WBAL (1090) in Baltimore for so many years.

I might be able to get 630 after sunset in upstate New York when I go visit my mother, for example.   I won't know until I get there.

Another point to make for those in the Frederick area is 106.3 WARK. 

WARK Hagerstown stations are listed on the affiliates but not the Frederick one. The Frederick station listed is I believe only on HD.

They need to make sure all 10 listeners in the DC area are aware of this change.

Good news though, 980 sucks.

Curious whether you know if we can listen to 630's Orioles game broadcasts over the internet. I know we get alternate programming on 105.7's site during Orioles broadcasts.

MLB rules prohibit that.   It's not up to the station.   If you can't get a station over the air, they want you to buy the product that lets you listen to all the games, rather than find some random affiliate that puts the games on the internet for anyone in the world to listen to for free.

The NFL is the same way, and about 10 years ago or so, it wasn't being enforced and when travelling I was able to listen to a Ravens game on some affiliate from the eastern shore that aired the station on the internet.   It didn't last too long, someone must have ratted them out.

Thanks SteveA. I had a feeling internet simulcasts may have been prohibited but I did not know that. I think it's foolish but that's just my opinion.

MLB At-Bat App on Apple and Andriod. $20 for the season gets you every home and away radio broadcast. Been that way for a decade.

You can get 105.7 in DC. Its not crystal clear, but you can get it. Thanks for the tip regarding the switch to 630, I was not aware.

Great news.  I live in Fairfax County and frequently the signal from 105.7 was stronger than 980.

I wonder if 630 will provide any Orioles coverage other than broadcasting the games.   980 never did.   It was kind of bizarre that they would broadcast the games but almost never mention the Orioles any other time.

If only Ken Beatrice was still alive to do the pre and post game shows on his old station 630!

I remember listening to him in the late 80’s when sports talk wasn’t on as much.

I listen through the SirusXM app in my car. If you already have satellite radio it's nice and clear. Each MLB team has their own dedicated channel which carries each radio broadcast. I'm not suggesting that you get satellite radio just for the games but if you already have it it is a nice plus.

Agreed. The Orioles have become a complete afterthought in the DC area inside the beltway. Rarely mentioned. Even WTOP doesn't routinely update O's game scores during their sports updates anymore.
