You can't save a guy to pinch run for the catcher on the off chance that the catcher becomes the tie run on base with two outs in the bottom of the 9th.  When you are trailing and you can bring up a pinch hitter who gives you a better matchup, you do it.

I hate these 3 man bench / 9 man bullpen rosters.  But that's what the game is nowadays.
