Halfway through at rebuilding season

54-108 may feel like the O's are going backward but there are some inspiring performances in the first half. Here what the numbers look like if they can duplicate their first half.

Cedric Mullins - On track for 198 hits and with a little luck maybe 200.   322/391/550/942 is All Star territory.    28 homers,  90 runs scored and 30 stolen bases.    Gold Glove defense in center.  Easily the O's MVP if he keeps this up.

Trey Mancini -  28 Homer and 108 RBI would be good any year but coming off chemo treatments it is astounding.  Leading contender for Comeback Player of the Year.

Ryan Mountcastle -  28 homers and 94 RBI puts him in the thick of the Rookie of the Year competition.

 John Means -   A  O.83 WHIP would lead the AL if he had enough innings to qualify.  2.28 ERA would be 2nd in the AL.  

Cole Sulser -  A 2.05 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, .191 average with 86 Ks in 61.1 IP would be a nice year.  It could work him into the closer role if he stays healthy.

With that kind of season on a good team I’d think Cedric would get an MVP vote or two. Just remarkable what he’s doing.  It’s the biggest development of the season and maybe the biggest of our whole rebuild so far.

We've also seen guys either not take the step forward or actually regress.  The injury questions, Hays, Santander, Stewart, Means, Diaz, and Harvey have all had injury issues again this season.

For sure, time will tell. Mullins still may be a bigger development even if Adley is who we hope he is though because it’s found money in a sense. The exact kind of unpredictable, lucky thing a rebuild needs to succeed when you have a “tight budget.”

Agreed.  While Santander has been injured, he has been the biggest disappointment for me.  

Meanwhile, even though Hays has had his usual injury issues, he has been relatively solid, with an OPS of .741, OPS+ of 102, and 8 homers.

I’m planning to do my usual mid season report card, but maybe not until the weekend.   I can certainly say that Mullins is getting an A+, and I’ll probably downgrade Means to a mere A for durability reasons.   

As to Mountcastle, I’m eager to see how his full season winds up.  Basically he was awful in the first quarter, awesome in the second quarter.   I’m 75% optimistic that his second half numbers will exceed his first half now that he’s got it going.

Hays also has played very good defense.   He’s been worth 1.2 rWAR in 51 games.  I’m hoping he finds a way to stay healthy in the second half.   Interestingly, he’s 6th on the team in PA despite all the missed time.    When he’s healthy, he plays.  (He did start last night’s game on the bench, but came in for defense late and ended up hitting a homer in his only at bat.)

Hays has a tendency to come off the IL and start very slow.  Diaz is the same way.  Then they start getting it in gear and show why you like them…and then they get hurt again.

3 games under their Pythagorean. Hardest SOS in baseball. Injuries to by far their best pitcher and probably their second best pitcher along with Hays and Santander. With all that being said, it’s unlikely their schedule will be much easier going forward and those injuries are becoming trends. Will the switch be flipped next year? I guess we’ll see

Very accurate.   Let’s hope the pattern breaks in the second half.

Agreed.  Love the 1.2 WAR so far.  Hays and Mullins are easily my two favorite players to watch on the current team.

On pace for 54 wins… yikes. I don’t know how to calculate how much better we’d be without the injuries, but I’m pretty sure we lost a few wins because of important absences. Santander and Hays are lots better than the alternatives, and they are with Mullins, and all three are healthy and playing, the OF can be a thing of beauty.

Im interested in whether McKenna can hit enough to be a worthwhile 4OF.

At the moment, aside from watching Mullins and Means, the best thing about this season may be reading the rage over at Pinstripe Alley.

The weird thing is how only the Orioles have had injured players this year.  Every other team completely healthy.  Never seen that happen before.
