The average level of play increases over time.

This can easily be seen with track and field events.

While that’s true, when I think of “greatest ever” I think, relative to their era.

As to Ohtani, he’d need to perform at a high level for a long time before I’d put him in a “greatest ever” conversation.   Now, if you wanted to argue that Ohtani’s 2021 season was the greatest season a player ever had, that would be an interesting discussion.

Find one that's routinely throwing 100 MPH fastballs and hitting 450 foot homers.

Find one with a 160 OPS+ and a 160 ERA+

I didnt say he wasnt talented. Is he better than Ruth. Ruth hit them far, and had heat, did he have 100 MPH.

Can he stand at the far edge of polo grounds outfield and throw a strike to the catcher without bouncing on the ground. Pretty darn athletics to pull that off.

Is he batting eye, good enough to bat .400?

Can he play 3rd base jump vertical, catch the ball, and throw to first while still sideways?

Im not saying your wrong in your opinion.

I just cant go there yet, for me.

Nobody has duplicated May's gigantic throw from the outfield at polo grounds.

The great will always be great.

The level of play from their supporting cast has improved over the years, that is for sure.

The Blade would probably be a UTL and on the bench, due to this bat, in this game. He is just one of many.

Fair enough.

My boys and I went to our 1st game of the year.  We had a great time as always, but boy was it depressing at times.  Anger is bad, apathy is worse, and there was a lot of apathy last night.

You had Orioles fans booing the Orioles for intentionally walking Ohtani.

The PA system started the 7 Nation Army chant multiple times and literally no one did it (at least in the bleachers where we were).

The system tried several other chants/claps like they always do with zero participation from the stands.

Ohtani got by far the biggest ovations from what was mostly an Orioles crowd (there were pockets of Angels fans as well).

I know I'm not saying anything that many of you haven't observed as well, but it's sad to see.  What a disaster.

BTW, has the PA system always been as bad as it is now?  We walked around several locations and only in a few spots could I hear/understand the announcer.  I didn't feel like that was the case in the past.  It needs a serious upgrade.

My son also got highly annoyed by the new PA announcer.  "Why does she say Pedrooooooooooooo Severinoooooooooooooo like he's some sort of good player" he asked haha.

The PA system is very spotty.   There are seats/areas where you can hear it great, and others where you can't.  Been that way for a while.

    • Baring injury Adley gets more War. Who do you want up to bat in a winner take all playoff game? Who do you want behind the plate with a Rickey Henderson type on first base in a tie ballgame 9th inning? I really bought into the switch hitting Jesus thing with Wieters.  This disappointment (perhaps misguided) led me to really not want to use a 1/1 draft pick on a catcher.   I am kind of wishing we went with Witt.   I think I heard people saying the most important position on defense is catcher.  So how does it compare to SS or Centerfield.   Would you be better off using Rick Dempsey type all glove and arm with light bat or going all in on a 1/1 on a catcher? If this has already been discussed tons dont yell at me I sometimes go months or weeks without posting.
    • Glad Bob Melvin and I don’t see eye to eye on that issue Well said, that make two of us, Bunting Ced down 5-3 with nobody out that late in the game is absurd.
    • Sorry to hear this--wishing you a sound recovery, in time for the O's run to the Series! (That would speed up the healing!)
    • Santander is a good case for the Rule V draft. That's unfortunately the same system that's going to make his next contract potentially look bad. If only he were a couple of years younger. It's hard to commit 25+M to a player at 30+. He's going to be missed in Baltimore, on the field and by the fans, but he's someone that they're going to have to let move on.
    • While I agree and find your comment funny, maybe just say something along the line of”Don’t give up on this team” or “Quite being Debbie downers” instead of assuming they are projecting the own misery in their lives. People might take it better if it doesn’t feel like a personal attack. Either way, that win felt good and I HOPE this is finally the turning point going into the playoffs soon.
    • I've made it clear that if they don't sign Santa and Burnes I'm ok with it as long as the money is allocated to other players they feel that fits their profile better .You know you have people on here like SG who only hears what he wants to hear. I need to learn to ignore that guy.
