Teixeira Watch: Part VII- Owner Says Sox Are Out

Them being on the "verge" was based on the sox team flying down to Texas.

them being out of it is based on a direct quote from the owner of the team.

One is speculation from ESPN, the other is directly from the horse's mouth. So there is a difference.

ESPN and the horse's mouth go together about as well as hot wings and brussel sprouts.

But I agree with Silent James, there is a big difference. ESPN ignores news that it does not want to hear. Simple as that.

I still do not see the reason for Henry to shoot an email out stating they are out of the race.

Seems to me to be a ploy by Boston.

I think a lot of the Red Sox posturing the whole time was to make sure the Yankees didn't sign Tex, and the yanks were doing the same thing. This seems to happen every off-season between the Red Sox and Yankees. I really don't think the Yankees or the Red Sox are willing to pay "CRAZY" money to keep Tex from signing with the Orioles, since we don't pose an immediate threat to either team. I believe this same scenario, to a lesser extent, also applies to keeping the Angels from signing Tex. Boston keeps the money high, never really intending to spend it on Tex. My 2 cents.....

Has Boston offically announced what their offer is or is it all speculation I for one don't remember anything from boston about term or dollar amount just speculation from the media. The only thing i heard from boston's owner is that 8 years is a really long time and they definatly would not go 10 years. I for one dont believe they were willing to go 8 years and they definatly would not give a opt out clause. I don't believe they valued Tex has valuable has the other clubs in the running.

Quick question. Why is everyone so obsessed with how we're being portrayed by the media? If I cut myself shaving, I bleed black and orange, but the fact of the matter, there is no reason why anyone outside of Baltimore should take us seriously. We've been irrelevant at best, a laughingstock at worst.

It wasn't always that way; we got a lot of love from espn from 95-98 when we were either fielding (or trying) to field a winner. That Cal Ripken guy wasn't exactly ignored. WE were on plenty of Wed and Sun nights too. Before Petey stop caring the O's- Yanks was the rivalry

Theo Epstein (quoted in November)

"In baseball, if you convince yourself you need a certain player, you’ve already lost. One player doesn’t have that much impact. It’s about building organizations. It’s not about adding players.

“There’s no player you can have to make up for an inherent weakness in the organization—a foundational weakness. You need to build the foundation up where you don’t need that one player. Yeah, you can pursue that player. He may be a great fit. But if it doesn’t work out or if the money gets ridiculous, you can turn to another player.”

Please continue to be hopeful. I really want Tex to come here.

But is it not weird that Henry would send an email out that they are out of the Tex race?

That seems to me to be a giant yellow flag.

If they were really out of it, why say anything? Let the other teams keep bidding higher and higher.

I really think this is a bluff. I hope I am wrong but everything that has happened so far leads me to not trust what I hear.

I'm with you Shawn....no way the Sox are out of it. This is simple negotiating by Henry. Until we get a report that Tex is signed, all teams are alive....O's, Sox, Yanks, Nats, Angels. And going by Boras' track record, there could always be a "mystery team" involved as well.

What ploy? I mean the Red Sox genuinely don't need Mark Teixeira why would they need to play coy to get him? Why fly all the way out there and then announce this?

It makes no sense to announce this unless you really are out of it.

You make all valid points, but my parents are from the Baltimore area ( I live on the Eastern Shore ) and they ( they dont share this belief ) have always told me people have a complex b/c they feel like the forgotten city so to speak because they are between Philly and DC. Maybe this goes along with that?

But I do believe ESPN will focus on winners, no matter where they are from geographically in the country.

Until we win, it will never change...

    • My post is coming off the wrong way.  The OP I quoted seemed like you were “lost for words” about why the team struggled the way they did. All I’m saying is I think you are like that because you didn’t see the scenarios where this much of a drop off from last year was going to happen.
    • But we have no idea who told her or of the info is good. She has given no reason to believe her. Im sure someone told her something but im not sure she smart enough to be able to tell the difference between good info and bad info.
    • I'm a big fan.  It doesn't mean I have sources in the clubhouse. Do we have any idea who her sources are?  Does she have any kind of track record of having reliable sources?
    • I don't know who this woman is and I don't do Twitter. And this is what I touched on in the other thread: I don't know what the best path forward is b/c I don't know exactly what the problem is. I don't think Hyde needs to go, but if this is true- and I have no idea if it is or not- he should be gone. The talk of veteran leaders brings questions.  What was insufficient of the leadership of Satandaner, Mullins, Burnes, and Kimbrel?
    • Sig for me is notably rigorous trying to combat this.    I feel pretty sure he had a say in crafting his very geeky title, a reflection of his personal brand. We'll see how it goes here if it becomes recommending Adam Frazier and Kyle Gibson as correct for the roster once again.
    • Again, I'm not sure what the point of contention is. They won 91 games and lost in the Wildcard round.  That puts them smack in the middle of what I forecast as their most likely outcome, though I did hope for more playoff success.  I'm not sure how that is proof I misevaluated anything. Further, again, lecturing me about the importance of depth, when I'm one of the biggest hoarders on this board, and you're one of the biggest opposite of that, is ironic to say the least.
    • Aaron Judge whined about it so I’m a fan.  The older I get, the more I think people just exist to look for confirmation biases. In all avenues of life. Paul Simon wrote “a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.” I’m sure if we beat the Royals and advanced and Walltimore robbed three or four homers from the Royals, we’d be extolling its virtues and how great it is.    But that didn’t happen. If anything, there were a couple instances where, if anything, it worked against us.    So here we are.
