Teixeira watch part IX....The final stages?

That is kind of a strange comment. I could see his point if there were rumors that Tex had made up his mind and an announcement is imminent but no one is reporting anything like that...

I think its more of Roch just nipping any thoughts that the Orioles are on the brink of something right now and it could break at any moment.

I don't think we're gonna get word of a Tex signing, whenever it is, by hearing a Press Conference has been set up and then we'll see it announced at that conference. The word will break that he's agreed to terms with whatever team he agrees with, then a day or two later they'll have the press conference making everything official.

Well, Roch says it is looking not so good.

"The Orioles aren't setting up for a press conference today to introduce Mark Teixeira to the local media. They're not arranging a physical. Optimism isn't flowing through the halls of the B&O warehouse."

He didn't say it's not looking too good. He's just saying it's the same as every other day (i.e no news).

He was a bust because of a drug problem not overall talent. Talent didn't prevent him from making it to the Majors.

I wouldn't consider him a bust at all.

Oh I don't either, one of the best players in MLB IMO. However, I have to think that the Rays consider him a waste of a draft pick.

Also, I think the Rays are very good at development. How many of our so called cant miss prospects never made it? I realize that you cant contribute all of those to our system but we cant turn a blind eye towards it either.

Which means that he isn't signing until after the New Year IMO...

Sorry to go OT for a sec, but...is that weird for you? To see this guy that you played a long time ago become a superstar who's the focus of national attention?

I played against him too...like the other dude said you kinda knew it was coming...we all kinda thought Mike Floyd was going to be better than he turned out though. I still say Gavin will win a CY Young in the next five years.

I see your point... Someone also mentioned not drafting well in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Where were Crawford, Sheilds and Baldelli drafted? Were they all 1st rounders? I'm not positive but I don't think Crawford and Sheilds were. I'm not sure about Baldelli.

So, you have a point here. Crawford (2nd round), Shields (16th round!) but Baldelli was a first rounder (6th). I would assume you could find more productive players taken in later rounds for the Rays. The Rays are probably just better than the O's at developing their players, not a surprise.

I just don't think the O's are good at getting the most out of their minor leaguers no matter what their talent.

Unless someone ups their offer to a level Boras wants it to be at soon, I think it will drag on for a bit longer. I do feel that all the teams involved are pretty close to maxed out contract-wise. I don't see the Red Sox going higher than their 8/~$175M offer. I think the Orioles will add the 8th year, but not much more than that, maybe a couple mill per year. I don't see the Nats going any higher than the Orioles. And I don't think the Yankees offer enough to be taken seriously. If one of the teams decide to blink and make the next step in the offer, I think they'll probably get him. I'd be fine if the Orioles make that step.

I think I'd rather go an extra year than an extra $2-3M a year if the overall dollar amounts stay relative equal.

I'm sitting at work and I see I have an email from a friend (with a title he is obviously unhappy) and a sports alert from NST. Immediately, I'm think Tex has signed somewhere else. As I frantically check the phone, I realize it's the time of the Raven's game changing to 4:15. Not good news for me as a ticket holder but it could have been much worse.:bangwall:

    • Actually, it was three times with Ortiz.  They won the fourth one in 2018 after he had retired.
    • I did recognize the possibility. As I said it's a serious concern.
    • While I do agree that there is luck involved in a lot of cases, I think this statement discounts the accomplishments of players like David Ortiz and lets our guys off the hook a bit too much.  The Red Sox went to the World Series 4 times in the Ortiz era and won every single one of them.  I feel like his 1.372 OPS in 14 WS games played a huge part in that and I don't think that is a crapshoot. He carried those teams and took the pressure off of everyone else. I also don't think our 0-5 record in the playoffs in the last two years and our hitters collectively failing in that 5th inning against KC are a crapshoot.  Those individual at-bats for Santander, Cowser, and Adley were very much in line with what they were doing wrong for much of the season.  A "dice roll" feels to me like everyone is on equal footing from a physical, mental, and experience standpoint and I just don't see that with our players relative to other teams' players.  I think the mental part plays a huge role in things.  Kind of like how the Minnesota Twins lost 18 consecutive playoff games over 19 years. While the individual players were different, I have to believe the later teams started to feel a ton of pressure to reverse that trend.  Our guys are working on a 10 game streak now and even though this Os team is only responsible for 5 of them, the pressure will only get worse each season.   I would love a chance to roll again next season.  But they can't keep firing blanks when they get there. That narrative is old and tired.
    • Mountcastle and his RH bat is staying IMO.  O'Hearn moves on and Kjerstad takes his spot as the LH platoon bat at 1B Holliday breaks camp as starting 2B although I'm intrigued with the idea of moving him to CF given Jackson Merrill's success with that. O's sign a solid veteran bat for RF (fingers crossed).  I don't hate the thought of Santander returning, but I'm not in love with it either. Mayo starts the season at AAA - he'll be 23 in December so it won't kill him even if it frustrates the hell out of rest of us.  I don't see Elias having more than 2 of Holliday/Kjerstad/Mayo working on their transition to ML at once even if Kjerstad is a weak side platoon. That's the way I see it breaking out.
    • He “kinda”let the team down. Honestly, what else is he gonna say? I’m not talented enough to hit the pitch that is thrown to me. I have to totally guess every single time or I can’t hit it.
    • I'm known for my alacritous gait.
    • Well maybe not as slow as you ambling around the Tampa area in your Birkenstocks.
