Sigh... the one that got away....

He had a very strong minor league resume and I did want the Orioles to give him a bit more of a chance. However, I am sure there would have been numerous times prior to '21 that I would have had no problem getting rid of him. It is also much harder to keep a Rule 5 player than a guy you have the freedom to option and work on things. Hard to blame the organization for this one.

I don't know about the very strong minor league resume part.  He was a 36th-round draft pick.  He was always a kind of swingman in the minors, only once starting more than 15 games in a season.  And that year with Scranton where he made 18 starts he saw his K rate drop off and his ERA was nearly 4.00.  From 2019 through the 2020-21 winter league season he was basically unpitchable, allowing 93 runs in 136 innings across multiple levels.

What suddenly changed in early '21?

This is a pure hindsight thing because he was one of the worst Orioles I've ever seen. He just didn't have the stuff at the time. He's added 3mph to his fastball since then, which has made all the difference.

Obviously now, I'd have put up with 3 extra losses in 2018 to keep him. If they somehow knew he could add that velocity then it would've been worth it.

Worst you've ever seen?  He only pitched 4.2 innings for the O's in 2018.

He did put up some pretty decent numbers in the minors.  A 2.57 ERA  allowing only 382 hits in 494 innings pitched, including 503 KO's.  In 220 innings of AAA ball he only allowed 172 hits and a 1.07 WHIP.   I'd say there was enough there, at least on paper, to give him a second look.

He joined the New York Yankees organization.

It'll be interesting to see if Taillon's performance conveys to his 2023 team (I bet it won't)...I'm pretty sure NYY will peace out.    They've fixed Clay Holmes, developed Michael King.    The tens (hundreds?) of millions they have for R&D seem to be manifesting in some way this season.

I'm just upset there haven't been any threads about how the O's let Jose Bautista get away.

We let Jose Bautista get away twice 🙂

The latter Bautista played on four different MLB teams in 2004.   Wow

Also barely did jack crap in the majors until he was 29, not hitting even 20 homers until his 54 homer explosion in 2010.  That is a Brady Anderson like anomaly.

He was like twice the size in Toronto he was in Baltimore.  I guess a late growth spurt.  🤣

The only thing I can think of when it comes to Bautista is maybe if Raffy shared some of his stash or he took one of Miguel Tejada's Vitamin B12 shots. Otherwise, I can't blame the Orioles for letting Bautista slip away.

Then what changed with the Yankee organization? Since he was there from 2013-18, then again in 2019, then again in 2021-today.  The Yankees thought so little of him that they left him unprotected in the Rule 5 draft, and then traded him to Seattle for future considerations.
