I'd rather see them finish 79-83 with all of the young guys getting as many AB as they can get instead of Odor/Hays/Aguilar getting AB and they finish 82-80 and 4 games out of the WC.

Adley and Gunnar are going to get plenty of AB. I want to see Vavra and Stowers get just as many.

I'd probably take the 82-80 record tbh. You probably aren't wrong but I don't think another week of ABs will make a big difference.

What was the Hays play?

I was driving home from work so I didn't actually see it (and still haven't), but Geoff Arnold described it, and people on the game thread discussed it.   A fly ball to left center, he had to go a good distance apparently, but shoudl have had it, he looked over at Mullins who was not able to get there but I guess Hays was worried about a collision, and lost the ball.   And Baez scored all the way from first base (there were two outs).

Pretty much. Hays was calling it and waving him off and then looked. Mullins was well over towards RC in a shift.

I'm just rooting for us to get to 82 at this point.  It shouldn't matter, and long term maybe it won't, but I will look back on this season even more fondly if they manage to finish above .500 after what the last few years looked like.  Just a really fun and exciting season, don't want to see it end on the downer that say 79 wins would be.  So if we get to 82 and are still in it when we do, then I'll worry about who we can catch.

That's where I'm at. It's been a really fun season and to even be mathematically still in a wildcard hunt on September 20th is quite the accomplishment for this team after coming off a horrid 2021.

If they can finish .500 or above, that's icing on the cake for this season.

Here's the play. Statcast said it was a 80% catch rate. Hays has several of these plays this year unfortunately.

I’m curious, how did you find this video?  Does Baseball Savant have videos of every defensive play?

They have videos of every pitch. You go to https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/statcast_search, search what you want and then click under the "Pitches" column to reveal the videos link.

For example this is every called strike on a slider thrown by a lefty Orioles pitcher at home this year

At what point should there be concern about the players in the lineup on a given night? I get it that this season has been a splendid surprise, but I worry moving forward that they seem to overthink the lineup instead of playing the best players.

Maybe it's nothing in the long run but I don't think most teams stress about LHP or RHP quite as much as the O's management.
