Eve Rosenbaum on the evolution of the Orioles’ hitting program

Just finished a listen, Laurila's questions after the ones justD captured were in essence Santander/Mullins, Mateo and Voth/Watkins.

The Santander answer had evergreen "little bit hobbled in 2021 w/injuries" and Best Shape of His Life in 2022 elements.

Mateo she volunteered that while Padres were playing him utility behind Tatis, they were watching him like "we'd play him SS everyday".     And once they got him encouraging him to have a "starting SS mindset" was part of what they did.

The fringe pitchers getting outs answer started with the basic "you're unoptimized - let's have you try what our algorithms think" stuff as far as pitch mix and targets go.    She gave a perspective one of the suboptimal things some guys do is aim for Edges (that they can't hit) when they have Stuff that can play anywhere, so just fill up the zone.     That doesn't sound like Voth/Watkins to me, but Felix Bautista, Cionel Perez oh boy, yeah.

She did single out Watkins "down" curve as a tool important for him getting LHB out.     She also at one point lumped DL Hall in with Vespi as lefty relievers who during 2022 shuttled some with few AL East reps because this year the in-division Bats were right-handed heavy.

Eve was plucked from the Astros organization after their Roberto Osuna controversy in 2019.   She quit the Astros shortly after the season and Elias scooped her up.  A really good hire.

She's outstanding. Probably my favorite Elias hire along with Perez.

This echoes a lot of what you see in the baseball development world at the you/high school/ collegiate levels.

Pitching side- everyone has a velocity program and velocity in prep/collegiate baseball is higher then ever.  Command of multiple pitches is the hardest component.

Every one wants the barrel to ball skill as the exit velocity can be attacked in the kitchen, weight room and rotational training, especially with over weight/under weight training.

As a point of reference- Gunnar Henderson's exit velocity topped out at 93 mph 12 months before he has drafted.

Good stuff. Incidentally, my son was a 2018 grad. PG had his exit velo posted off a tee. Not sure that is the case here or not, but it used to be that way. Obviously, off a pitched ball, hitters will have higher EV.
