Top 40 Pitchers in 2009 Draft

Recommended Posts

I like Davidson 6th personally ;) He is an option, just depends on who does what this season. I completely agree, I want to see some progression so I can redo everything :)

Yeah, there just isn't much new to go on unless you are in the business and staying in touch with these kids personally. Meanwhile, they are practicing, lifting, etc., and many will look very different when they take the field in the Spring.

Just so long as they don't resemble 'El Sid', I think we can tolerate the change :D

Where are Andy Oliver and Mike Minor projected to go? I'm assuming that there is no way that either slip to us in the second round.

Also, if Tanner Scheppers proves that he healthy, how high can we expect him to go in the draft?

So much can change and I am not even looking at the teams drafting, but I think it is safe to assume both will go off the board between picks 15 and 25 if it was held today. Who could we get? . . . I would be looking somewhere past the 20th ranked pitcher for that second round pick.

As we all know, much of this will change.

Prelim. I had Minor ranked around 12-13, and I think Greg liked him a bit more than that.

I think Scheppers goes in the 2nd if he has an OK season, and in the 20-30 range if he has a good season.

Yeah, I think a good season gets him in the 20s . . . an OK one will find him as a sandwich.

Personally, I still take Matt Davidson. But I'm a vocal minority on that one. I'd consider Crow or Miller. I don't know, I'm pretty set on my valuations at the top of the draft right now because there isn't a ton of new info coming out (end of February can't come fast enough! :)). Oliver might slip if he can't pitch at Ok State this year. I don't think he makes it to the 2nd round, though (unfortunately).

I'd like to hear your argument for Davidson. Not that I'm doubting, I'm just curious because I haven't seen his name come up very often.

Well what is it about him that you think other people are underrating? We could certainly use a solid 3B...

- I think he can stick at 3B (some think he'll end up at 1st)

- plus-plus power with room in frame to add a little more size

- I like his approach and think it will play well at the pro level

- He looked good with wood bats when I saw him this summer

That's all I got ;)

Team USA experience. Committed to USC but being a top 5 pick has a way of changing that. Think David Wright. I am also a big fan. Not underrating, it is just too early to get the hype for HS kids, give it a couple months.

I don't think he's the fielder that Wright is, but he might actually have more power when all is said and done. Probably won't hit for as high an average, but he could.

What do you think is a good MLB comparison for Davidson other than Wright?

    • I don’t consider a 4 o’clock game a night game. He also caught Wednesday night and Thursday day this week. Moral of the story is McCann will start 4 games in 7 days because he is Burnes preferred catcher.
    • It is absolutely possible. In 2022, the Mets gave a QO to Bassitt, Nikki, and DeGrom. The Red Sox gave a QO to Boegarts and Eovaldi. The Yankees gave a QO to Judge and Rizzo. The Dodgers gave a QO to Turner and Anderson. I know that it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Santander will not be on the team after this season, and while I generally agree that it is more probable than not that he will not be re-signed, I do think there is a non-zero chance that he will be retained. I think he is the most likely of Mullins, Hays, and himself to be retained, even if it is a small chance. The team has told us how they feel about his bat because he plays essentially everyday, and I have heard Kostka say that they value his clubhouse presence.
    • Santander won’t get a QO, and if he did, he would accept. His defense is declining and we have too many capable youngsters who should replace him effectively. But to your question, I don’t know if there’s a limit, but I doubt it.
    • O's will probably have to wait till July for a trade because there are so many more buyers than sellers.  I think teams like the Blue Jays, Rays Tigers and Mets are likely to be sellers but they are still in the race although not very good teams as constituted.
    • No Scott. He’s way too undependable. We need someone who WON’T enter a game and walk folks like he’s promoting a healthy lifestyle. He’s been a lot bette4 this season, but he’s too undependable, and we already have too many of those. No Flaherty either. That’s like taking your GF back after she cheated on you.
    • The team's continued success has really put Elias on the spot IMO and I don't see a Flaherty type as an option anymore.  My money is on a sensible trade that comes at a price high enough that most of us here, including myself, won't like, but a premium comes with having bad luck and that's where the O's are at the moment.
    • I would be very surprised if every last one of the GM's Elias talks to about quality starting pitching doesn't start by asking about Westburg and the rest.  Again, I think it's a mistake to believe that the O's have a ton of leverage here.  They certainly have some, and Elias is smart and disciplined, but I don't see any bargains.  I especially don't see the luxury of acting like youth and multiple years of control is any kind of rigid starting point for the O's.
