I seem to remember someone in the minors telling him he should walk more and he said something like, "If I had just hit a double we wouldn't be having this conversation."

He's not wrong, if he was hitting doubles we wouldn't be having this conversation.

As bad as he has been at least he isn't Jose Abreu who was the prized replacement everyone wanted us to sign in the off season.  I thought he was in decline and wanted no parts of him but man has he fell off cliff.  1 homer yikes

As bad as he has been he has been better than Manny Machado & Carlos Correa

Mountcastle seemed to think he could be Vladimir Guerrero or Kirby Puckett and get away with swinging at everything. He isn't that caliber of hitter.

Same. I was flummoxed at all the people saying we should sign him this year. All you had to do was look at his diminishing power last year, and his unsustainable BABIP to know he was a bad signing.

I missed where he said that, but if that's accurate, then that's really troubling.

If he doesn't understand that his value is limited because he swings at everything and currently has an on base percentage of .273, maybe he's not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I think he said something like this to Buck during spring training.

Abreu is 2nd to last in all of baseball this season in WAR at -1.6  only ahead of Jean Saguera.  he has been much worse then those two who still have positive WAR.

He needs to be replaced.   Why not see if Westburg can play first?

Westburg can definitely play RF, though, and that would allow Santander to play 1B. I actually think Westburg has always been the most important callup for this team because we have so many bad options against LHP. But Cowser coming up can also push Santander to 1B. I'd also take Urias at 1B over Mountcastle in general, even though Urias has struggled recently. But I think that's related to the injury that put Urias on the IL.

Mountcastle isn't needed on this team at all given his poor overall offensive production and that he's been a defensive liability this season, but I would keep him as a DH and occasional 1B against LHP.

Once Cowser and Westburg are up, Mountcastle is actually (or should be) one of the odd men out as a regular in the starting lineup.

I imagine we'll have the rest of this season and a good portion of next season to see what Mountcastle will be, or not be.

I think this is correct, but only if he continues to flash the good side of his streakiness.  If he continues as he is currently, I think his days are numbered.

Either way, it's clear the Orioles are taking a path that says the younger players have to prove they are better.  Of course, they have to have actually action to do so.

As long as the Orioles are winning, we see a slower process.  If that changes then, opportunities will abound.

    • Holliday went 1 for 2 with 3 walks on Friday night. 2024: .444 OBP, .911 OPS MiLB Career: .447 OBP, .931 OPS His OBP is EXACTLY what this O's team needs, would fill a key offensive weakness at 2nd base, help grind opposing pitching, and magnify the power up and down the lineup.  It's all dependent on his ability to throw and play 2B at a passable level. If Holliday starts to hit at the ML level, the question of who bats leadoff is over for the foreseeable future and we can go back to complaining about 1 slumping hitter or backup catcher at the bottom of the lineup.
    • This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs: 1. pitching 2. pitching 3. pitching 4. damn, forgot the 4th one. oh yeah, its pitching.
    • All I know is that Suárez has earned at least one more start, after today.
    • Scherzer still looks like a guy who would be a nice add to our rotation in the second half if the Rangers are sellers.
    • Not happening. I don’t disagree, but Kremer will be slotted in the rotation.
    • I wouldn’t either but the word here is that he’s going back to rotation . Suarez supposedly the one  to be moved to bullpen . I think they should wait and see if Irvin can rebound . If Irvin can’t match Suarez’s work, then he should be moved to bullpen
    • Yes that’s what I was asking. COC was completely off base in his comment. Judge is a great player, and apparently a nice guy. I have nothing against him, or most Yankees, for that matter, though Gil’s tats are off putting. I am expecting a bit of pro Yankee bias, but that’s ok. Also, home runs is a very glittery stat, and might sway some folks. But it should be Gunnar, at least based on the first 81.
