While we wait for word on whether GRod has made our Opening Day roster, here’s a place to collect news on what other prospects have done so.

The Yankees have announced that Anthony Volpe has made their roster as their starting SS.

Nothing against him personally, but I’m praying he turns out to be badly overhyped.

24 players have made their debut in the first four days of the season, 12 hitters and 12 pitchers.

Of the 12 hitters, two (Oscar Colas and Masataka Yoshida, have prior experience in the Japanese League, though Colas spent all of 2022 in the White Sox minor league system.  The other ten include the highly touted Jordan Walker and Anthony Volpe, plus Corey Julks HOU), Blake Sabol (SFG), Brice Turang (MIL), Joey Wiemer (MIL), Ryan Noda (OAK), Cesar Salazar (HOU), Nathan Lukes (TOR), and Brett Wisely (SFG).   So far as I know, Volpe and Walker were considered top 5 prospects while Colas, Tyrang and Wiemer were in the 80-100 range.  The others are not too 100 guys (Yoshida isn’t eligible).  In the early going, Noda, Salazar, Lukes, and Wisely  have strictly been bench guys.  It should be noted that Noda, Salazar, Julks and Lukes are all at least 27 years old.

Of the 12 pitchers, 4 have started a game, the other 8 have been used in relief.  Two of the four starters are Japanese veterans (Kodai Senga and Shintaro Fujinami).  The others are Jhony Brito (NYY) and Jared Shuster (ATL).  Neither is a top 100 prospect, though Shuster was a no. 1 pick in 2020.   It’s possible we could see some other starter debuts as teams work their way through their rotations this week.

172 days

A player is deemed to have reached "one year" of Major League service upon accruing 172 days in a given year.

33 players debuted by the April 13 deadline for earning a full year of service.  20 of the 33 were pitchers.  We’ll see how many of these guys stay in the majors all year and earn a full year of service.

Last year 49 players debuted before the cutoff (April 17 last year).   It appears 19 of those earned a full year of service, including our own Felix Bautista.  The guy who really got hosed was the Phillies’ Bryson Stott, who was on the OD roster but was sent down for 18 days in late April/early May and ended up with 171 days of sevice, one day short of getting credit for a full year.
