Using only players in the organization…

Right now, the offense needs a boost. I would swap out McKenna and Vavra for Stowers and Cowser. We have Mateo, Henderson, Urias and Frazier for the three IF positions; no need for Vavra. Cowser and Stowers can rotate in RF with a spot start in LF and CF. Cowser can also be the backup CF should Mullins go down. There is no reason ever for McCann to DH.

So, I think there is plenty of reason to stand pat. Chemistry is good, team is winning, etc…

But this is far from a complete team And I would be fine with big changes right now although the argument to wait another few weeks is certainly valid.

For me, by mid May, my roster would have Ortiz, Westburg and Stowers up, with each playing at least 4 games a week.

I wouldn’t change the pen until Tate and givens are back although if you prefer a different long man to Voth, that’s fine.

I would keep Hall down. Irvin can stay down while he is pitching poorly, so he doesn’t effect things right now.

Cowser could enter the picture by mid May too. Just a matter of how you do it. I guess you could deem him to be the change over Stowers.

Who goes to get Ortiz, Westburg and Stowers up? I said I like Ortiz for Vavra now and I would like to see Westburg but that seems like it will be tough to do without trading Urias.  I know there is a lot of love for Stowers around here but the best thing for him is to get traded as part of a deadline package.  Hyde and Elias clearly don't favor him if Vavra was getting starts over him.  I wouldn't be surprised if Cowser has surpassed him at this point.

Stowers to replace Vavra.

Westburg to replace McKenna. Against all lefties, Westburg DH's or plays RF (with Santander at DH) or in the infield rotation if Gunnar occasionally sits against a LHP. Westburg would still get playing time against righties as DH, RF, 2B, or 3B. McCann should never be getting regular starts as a DH against LHP. Only as the backup C to rest Adley.

Vallimont to replace Voth.

Hard to focus on roster changes when we are 14-7 and coming off back to back sweeps. Don't fix what ain't broke.

The last guys on the roster are O'Hearn and Vavra. I guess I wouldn't mind seeing Stowers take Vavra's spot but I'm also fine with giving Vavra a shot for a while.

Yes, we are 14-7, but our offense sucks right now.

Do you honestly think Jackson Holiday could beat out the six guys ahead of him right now?

Let's see if he can go .500/.500 in the next league until Memorial Day.

I think the pitchers who can mostly get him out are still in the Minors this year, but boy would I love to be wrong.

Fancifully recalling Soto's Age 19 year, he played 16, 15, 8 and 116 games at the 4 levels he touched but he skipped AAA and we know Mike Elias would never allow that.     Soto did post as many extra base hits as strikeouts, a junk stat where Holliday only managed 0.75 at Delmarva.

Holliday is about 6 weeks younger relative to Soto birthdays wise.

We've had a tight stretch of five games where we scored 2, 5, 2, 4,  and 1. Eduardo was really, really good yesterday. Before that we scored 8, 6, 6, 8, 4, 12, and 5. Overall we are #10 in MLB OPS. I think we're fine. The main guys who are struggling are Gunnar and Santander, maybe Mountcastle. These are all guys with long leashes, not guys you move on and off the roster.

I will say I would not mind seeing O'Hearn start and Mountcastle sit against the occasional RHP.

It might be unpopular with his hot start but why not see if there is any potential to sell high and get value by flipping Mateo to a team like the Dodgers with a lot of arms and a desperate need at SS.  When it's all said and done I don't think there would be much (if any) decline in overall productivity for the remainder of 2023 if the Orioles constructed an IF among Gunnar, Westburg, Ortiz, etc...

Bringing up Cowser to back up and play sparingly is really dumb.

I agree with this.    The squeeze hits the infielders getting a lot of DH oxygen now when he arrives.

You don't mess with Mateo now anymore than you do Tyler Wells in the rotation, so in essence Frazier-Urias get compressed to a 2B platoon.     Elias should try and get Victor Martinez for a DH consulting gig for Santander.

I hope Vavra/McKenna don't end up with the 350 PA they are on pace for.

    • It is absolutely possible. In 2022, the Mets gave a QO to Bassitt, Nikki, and DeGrom. The Red Sox gave a QO to Boegarts and Eovaldi. The Yankees gave a QO to Judge and Rizzo. The Dodgers gave a QO to Turner and Anderson. I know that it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Santander will not be on the team after this season, and while I generally agree that it is more probable than not that he will not be re-signed, I do think there is a non-zero chance that he will be retained. I think he is the most likely of Mullins, Hays, and himself to be retained, even if it is a small chance. The team has told us how they feel about his bat because he plays essentially everyday, and I have heard Kostka say that they value his clubhouse presence.
    • Santander won’t get a QO, and if he did, he would accept. His defense is declining and we have too many capable youngsters who should replace him effectively. But to your question, I don’t know if there’s a limit, but I doubt it.
    • O's will probably have to wait till July for a trade because there are so many more buyers than sellers.  I think teams like the Blue Jays, Rays Tigers and Mets are likely to be sellers but they are still in the race although not very good teams as constituted.
    • No Scott. He’s way too undependable. We need someone who WON’T enter a game and walk folks like he’s promoting a healthy lifestyle. He’s been a lot bette4 this season, but he’s too undependable, and we already have too many of those. No Flaherty either. That’s like taking your GF back after she cheated on you.
    • The team's continued success has really put Elias on the spot IMO and I don't see a Flaherty type as an option anymore.  My money is on a sensible trade that comes at a price high enough that most of us here, including myself, won't like, but a premium comes with having bad luck and that's where the O's are at the moment.
    • I would be very surprised if every last one of the GM's Elias talks to about quality starting pitching doesn't start by asking about Westburg and the rest.  Again, I think it's a mistake to believe that the O's have a ton of leverage here.  They certainly have some, and Elias is smart and disciplined, but I don't see any bargains.  I especially don't see the luxury of acting like youth and multiple years of control is any kind of rigid starting point for the O's.
    • I say this as someone who defended Cowser like 2 posts ago, but like his fWAR number is entirely dependent on how much you're buying his defense.  I can totally buy the argument that maybe OAA is overrating him a bit, so he's not really on pace to be a 5.5 win player.  The OAA number is pretty eye-popping.
