The walk gods

Cowser 31 BB in 164 PA (18.9%)

Holliday 26 BB in 126 PA (20.6%)

Mayo 18 BB in 121 PA (14.9%)

Young 18 BB in 115 PA (15.7%)

Willems 16 BB in 99 PA (16.2%)

Holliday has walked more than he’s struck out, the only player in the org with significant at bats who can make that claim.  Two guys who are close are Frederick Bencosme (14 BB vs. 15 K’s in 92 PA) and Elio Prada (14 BB vs. 16 K’s in 109 PA).  If you want to drop down to 72 PA, Shane Fontana has 11 BB vs. only 10 K’s.

It’s nice when you hear that the organizational philosophy is going to be about choosing and developing hitters with strike zone control, and then you actually see it happening on multiple levels of the organization. Hopefully we’re seeing the early fruits of the start of a long term trend here. Seems that way.

We’ve struggled for so long to pitch against patient lineups line the BoSox and Yankees; now we’re making significant strides to BE one of those lineups. Great to see.

And it stands to reason that guys who display this level of discipline with umpires would benefit even more from the automatic zone, right?

When I watch guys like Gunnar and Vavra who rely heavily on drawing walks, I feel they're much more often punished by the umpire calling a ball as a strike rather than the other way around. I'm guessing it's even worse in the minors.

Def seems like it would worse in the minors. The Tides challenged a couple of ball/strike calls last night (and won them both) with a live umpire. I had no idea that was a thing in the days they have live umps. Put it up on the big screen like tennis replays. Hopefully that will start to normalize the zone.

The Challenge calls are awesome.  So fun.

Something tennis did I think is cool is pipe in audio of OUT calls to emulate real life experience for viewers.     The first time I noticed it, the broadcasters had to call it out.    The ball kids were still in position so the visual that the linespeople were gone wasn't even jarring.

MLB being in the business of crafting baseball-flavored entertainment, maybe they could have a Leslie Nielsen audio day somewhere down the road.
