Possibly, but overpaying is relative to the buyer.

There are only so many major league starting pitchers. So, if you need one and you don't get one because you weren't willing to give up a little more, maybe it's your evaluation that's off. In the end, your still a pitcher short.

Or maybe your evaluation is correct and your in-house options make better sense (a la the comp that says Stroman = Kremer).

The other route, which Elias has demonstrated already (Povich, McDermott, & Johnson, 2022), is to reach instead (via trades) into the larger and cheaper pool of near-MLB-ready pitching at AAA and AA. I predict we'll see more of that coming up with our tradeable position player excess (MLB and AAAA), where a Hays/Urias/Mateo/Norby package, for example, should bring a top AAA/AA pitcher duo, deferring present surplus to near-future return.
