George Kirby, the guy pitching against us tonight...could make an interesting option for the the Orioles..

If Seattle trades a pitcher at the deadline, my money is on Woo.  He’s still the guy I would want the most although the injuries are a bit concerning.  That said, I would deal Mounty(or Santander) for him in a heartbeat.

Pitching Woo?

The notion that Kirby will be traded is frankly absurd, but there is also a big reason why I would not want the Orioles to consider such a trade.

A primary component of Kirby's value is the years of team control, which I assume is 4.  In such a deal, the Mariners are going to try to get a huge premium for those control years.  However, those years also come with enormous risk for a young pitcher that throws as hard as Kirby does as we have experienced with Wells, Bautista, Bradish, and Means.  I can't see a way the Orioles bridge that gap in expectations and get a deal with properly discounted future value of Kirby relative to the lower-risk position players we'd be giving up.

If you're going to trade for pitching, you're better off trading for rentals at the time of need or prospects, but not years of control for pitchers at the ML level.

The Mariners lead their division and are a playoff team on the strength of their pitching.  Why are they trading someone from their rotation?

I will never understand stuff like this.

Like, are there Mariners fans who think they can get Grayson from us?

I'm sure there's a group at Mariner's Hangout who just knows this team doesn't have it, the front office stinks, the players are under-performing, any day they'll be passed by the Astros, and it's time to rebuild for '27. Get what you can for whatever assets are there before it inevitably comes crashing down.

See: some part of Orioles Hangout pretty much every year from '12-16.

Hancock isn’t a reliever..he’s a starter and a highly rated one (or he was when eligible)

They aren’t going to put him in the pen when they want him to continue to start.

He’s been terrible, according to baseball savant, and terrible starters become relievers.

And of course if you can solve a problem in-house that’s what you do. ATM they have no one among their own pitching prospects who can provide help this season, so no reason not to put your 6-7 SPs in the pen, which, BTW, is exactly what we were going to do with Wells, for example, and are now doing with Irvin.

I’m not going to keep going in circles.  You are just wrong on this take of how they are handling Hancock.  It’s just a bad take.

No it’s not. I looked up his stats carefully. He’s in the minors for a reason and all that blue at Baseball Savant isn’t an aesthetic choice.

I wonder if Kjerstad, Mountcastle and Irvin would work.

I know it's unlikely, but we'd have Mayo for right, Cowser in left and Basallo at first for the long term. I think we'll have to trade one of the big prospects for a starter at some point.

    • Hey man, It breaks my heart that the O’s destroyed our season of hope. Hyde’s got to go. Watching those post-game excuses and lack of fire is not good for inspiration - club house or fans!. Pathetic. Call out stuff, not play victim. Apparently every team had amazing pitching! (Eye roll). A re-set is going to happen. A few more guys getting experience, a few guys going away, and revamping that horrible bullpen. Easy moves: let Santander walk, don’t waste money on LT contracts for SP - even Burnes, get Alex Bregman! , get more speed!
    • Division is going to be tough next year.  Rays have reloaded, Red Sox have a new core in place and will likely supplement with a big Fa splash or two, and the Yankees will continue to be the Yankees. Ultimately O’s success or lack thereof will rest on the improvement of their young positional talent, but seems like we need to add some kind of weapon vs left handed pitching.  And will need to either replace or resign Burnes, not something easy to do without significant financial investment.
    • I think the 10 straight postseason losses have/will continue their toll on O’s fans . When doubts and pessimism about the team’s performance, the empty seats could still be issue when next October comes .  My hope is Rubenstein and Elias will conclude that status quo is NOT acceptable .
    • Look, I don't want to insult you or anybody else, but arguing that a 55 win team is the same as a 95 win team is moronic beyond belief. It's just that simple.
    • So everything is great as long as we just make the playoffs? At what point is expecting to win a playoff game acceptable? Isn’t the goal to win a WS or is it to win more than 80 games? If we’re just going to keep failing when it really matters in the playoffs then 55 wins or 95 wins doesn’t make a difference in the grand scheme of things. In fact, you could argue 55 is better for the long term.
    • Right right after both Adley and Hyde have been saying for 2 months that he is completely healthy
    • Good point. I long for the days of 55 wins when we didn't have to worry about postseasons and such.
