It’s not about a playoff push. It’s about he’s a proven mlb arm to try to salvage with 2 years of control left. You don’t claim him for now, you claim him in hopes of getting excess value out of him in 2025. Like when we claimed Jorge Mateo. The dollar amount isn’t the same, but the idea is. And they burn that kinda money all the time. We paid Tony kemp 1mm for this year, knowing he was just filling a roster spot until Jackson came up.

Zero MLB teams claimed Irvin.  It seems none of them agree with you.  That's a pretty clear indicator.  I don't know what else to tell you.

All I was saying is that I was surprised he made it through waivers given he has some proven value and track record.

I'm very happy he cleared waivers. He's shown well pretty often over the last couple of years, but then can't sustain it. I still see him as having a chance to provide value for this year's team out of the bullpen if he can get straightened out.

But we'd have to offer him arbitration, right? So is it likely that he could be around next year?

I wouldn't be surprised if the O's offer him arbitration, especially if they think they can get him back to early season form.  $3 mill or less is a cheap #5 starter.  Having 5 MLB ready starters is not going to cut it.  I would like at least 7 starters before the O's have to go with Povich or McDermott, even if they show some positive signs before the end of the year.  A lot of teams are stocked full of guys in AAA who if not top pitching prospects can at least fill in for a game or 2.  The scary thing is that Povich and McDermott were the O's good starters at AAA, imagine what the bad starters would have done.

Also, if we offer him arb, we can cut bait before Opening Day and only be on the hook for 20% of the arb figure.  If he's likely only going to get $3 million in arb, then a 600k gamble on him being a swingman type as a lefty is a good one to take.  Deep depth.

Irvin started for Norfolk this afternoon and had a pretty good outing, allowing 1 R on 2 hits in 4 innings, walking 2 and striking out 2.  He threw 61 pitches.

Something tells me we're absolutely going to need him before this season is over.
