It seems to me like many of the hitters are not aggressive at all on the first pitch. They take those pitches which frequently catch more of the plate than any others they see during the at bat. Frequently this is followed by fouling off a pitch to get behind in the count and eventually flailing away a terrible pitch that wasn't even close to being a strike. It would be great if Cowser and O'Hearn and Adley could start driving the ball again instead of the lazy opposite field pop outs or K's. Maybe swinging away on the first pitch at actual strikes could make a difference. -
I imagine there's a big increase in errors on defense that coincides with our struggles in the second half. And not just by second-string players replacing injured starters. (cough*cough*Gunnar) -

Well why did you think they would be good.? I think I recall them having trouble stopping the run last year and it's basically the same cast from last year -

Well I certainly hope you're right. I would love to be wrong I just have extreme doubts about it. I think it's a combination of injuries to the pitching staff and the hitting that just went in the tank the past couple of months that has me feeling so negative about their chances -
The third segment is the only one with 0 plate appearances from Westburg and Mateo, and only a handful of plate appearances from Urias and Mountcastle. The guys soaking up those guys’ playing time have been unable to replicate their production. You’ve got a couple other guys slumping but choose any chunk of any season and you’ll find some slumpers. I think losing a complete infield of solid MLB infielders is the #1 suspect. -
So what are the biggest factors to the offense falling off of a cliff in your view? -
I have a feeling that Irvin will do better in another organization than he did with us. It seemed like the O’s were trying to make him into something he wasn’t, chasing higher velo, etc. Also, I don’t think Brandon Hyde really believed in him. We’ll see next year.
