2010 Draft Position Race

Recommended Posts

Sorry in advance if this upsets people. I am all about winning except when they are meaningless wins and cost you the possibility of drafting people like Teix. What is the difference between finishing 2nd to last or 8th to last.

But it looks like we are solidly in 4th place for draft position next year.

Wash - 47-92

KC - 54-85

Pitt - 54-85

Balt - 56-83

Clev - 60-79

There are several of teams around 62 wins.

Seems like we could draft anywhere from 2nd to 5th, which I don't have a problem with. It would be nice to be able to pick between one of the top 2 college pitchers Pomeranz or Ranauldo. Or hopefully a SS prospects shoots up the boards. Maybe Washington passes on Harper?

I hope we don't have a Teix like debacle and end up sweeping the last weekend of the year in a meaningless series and cost us a higher pick.

We will end up with the 4th pick. We are bad, but we are not as bad as the Wash, KC and Pit. I have been following these teams the past few weeks to see where we will be picking. They really only win about one game per week it seems. They are really bad. I am not worried about Pit finishing ahead of us though because they always pass on premium talent (except for Alvarez that one year) for players that should be drafted late in the first (money). We will get another good player in the system. I am almost ready to officially endorse Christian Colon as my player to want this year. I have one every year. Two years ago it was Smoak and last year it was Grant Green. 0-2 so far! :scratchchinhmm:

Would be nice to pick in front of KC. Can't believe I am watching the KC Game right now cheering for them. They seem to take the high risk guys.

Is that Brandon Wood as you moniker? That is just a sad story the way they have treated him.

Christian Colon looks good, but I wont be too worried about where we sit in the top 5. This year's top 5 is loaded IMO. Pomeranz, Ranaudo, Harper, Brentz, Cole, Tailon.....All these guys are premium talent.

Wow, Harper is so good he is listed twice!!:D Or, seriously are there two Harpers that I should be paying attention to?

Wow, Ill bet we get a top 3 pick......

1: Harper

2:?

3:?

Don't be so sure that the Nationals will take Harper. Stras alone won't sell tickets. The Nationals need a draw and Harper is at least 4-5 years away. After the headache of the Stras negotiations, I expect them to take one of the big college arms with the thought they would be in the OD rotation with Stras in 2012.

Do the Pirates take Harper? I really doubt it. Sanchez this year is proof enough to me that they won't spend big on somebody, despite the Pedro Alvarez selection.

Do the Royals take Harper? It's very possible.

Do the Orioles take Harper? Answer that one definitively and ESPN will give you a job.

The Nats absolutely will take Harper. They have a ton of money to spend and will always take the best player. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if they floated the idea of Bryce taking the GED and coming out early through his brother Bryan when they drafted him. Unless Harper gets hurt or sucks big time in college, he'll be a Nat.(Assuming Pittsburgh doesn't choke beyond belief)

Even if they don't, the Royals would take him. They'll spend big on high upside players.

I think it's funny to read Oriole fans speculating on other teams passing him up when the O's took the cheaper, more signable player this year. Didn't McPhail say he wouldn't have taken Wieters?

One name I'm surprised I haven't seen talked about more for the O's is Trey Griffin. He's Avery's half brother and would probably cut a deal like Hobgood, allowing the O's to spend more on later pics and/or IFAs. I've seen him and he has a high upside IMO.

I dont want Harper. Id rather take one of the HS arms, college arms or a college bat like Brentz.....Hes gonna cost a pretty penny though for sure. And I do see what your saying, Crow was bad enough of a ride as it was, then Strasburg was another situation that came down to the wire, so they may go the easy route. But thats too much $$ to spend on a HS kid who may end up like Rowell for all we know....

What you have to understand though, is that the reason the O's went the route they did was because the asking prices were all premium asking prices, but the talent that was asking for the specific prices wasnt on par with the asking price. The O's will spend big bucks for a top notch 1st rounder, they just have to have close to as much abilities as asking price.

I disagree. Jacob Turner and Tyler Matzek were worthy as HS pitchers. Both have huge upsides. If the O's had taken a college player I could buy that argument. They took a player with lower upside than some guys that went later, but still have the risk associated with taking a high schooler.

They went cheap and that's fine. I'm not attacking them for it. They used the money saved to pay overslot on several lower picks. They're going quantity over quality.

They were asking for $6 mill. Thats what we paid for Wieters......Theres no comparison between Matzek and Wieters. The only pitcher with stuff and polish who was close to the premium price would be Matzek. apparently, Jordan saw something in Hobgood that made him believe Matzek wasnt worth $4mil more. If it were AJ Cole, the kid whose been thrown around with the names Beckett and Porcello, thats a different story, your paying that much money for a kid who may actually be worth the asking price.

Hobby isn't far behind Matzek, and I'd put him just about on the same level as Turner. It was more than in all of the "predictions" Hobgood wasn't expected to go until closer to 10-15, so if they thought he had as much talent as some of the kids at 5 they could get him cheaper. In the end I'm sure it was the character/intangibles that led them to take him, they have been going that direction a lot lately.

As for Harper, I wouldn't go thinking he is the slam dunk that publications make him out to be. I've seen him in person, he's good, he deserves to be talked about at the top of the first round, but he's not head and shoulders above anyone like Strasburg was. With Harper it's wait and see right now, see how he does against CC competition, see how he does with a wood bat, see how he moves as he grows and what position he will play. Lots of questions still. I would think long and hard about taking AJ Cole over him right now.
