"How To Buy An MLB Team" by David Einhorn

So if things go south for the Wilpon's in the Bernie Madoff suit, David Einhorn could become the majority owner of the Mets for $200,000,001.00. At worst, for giving the Wilpon's a $200 million cash loan, he will end up with 1/6 of the franchise in 3 years. Not a bad move. No wonder the guy is rich.

Actually, its more like, "No wonder the Wilpons got taken by Madoff."

If Frank McCourt were smart, he'd be trying to do this kind of deal instead of the idiotic Fox TV contract to save his ownership. Worst case, he loses the team like he is about to anyway. Best case, he gives away part of the team to keep his ownership.

Of course the key here is the Einhorn deal will have to be approved by MLB. I'm not sure how the other owners would feel about a franchise in the #1 market valued at as much as $1 billion potentially changing hands for just $200 million + $1.00. And, of course, they could overrule it for no other reason than they just get a bad vibe from Einhorn. Of course Bud likes Fred Wilpon too, so that helps.

As for the Dodgers, I think most MLB owners would be happy to see new ownership at this point, so I doubt they will be too inclined to approve a similar deal for McCourt. And it sounds like Bud sent in his henchman to quash the Fox deal....which is obviously smart on MLB's part.
