Add Luis Ayala to the stable

I sure hope this is what's happening. I honestly can't think of a reason for this guy getting a big league contract.

I would figure that a trade would likely need to be made moving forward.

Where do you put the following pitchers if they do not make the starting 5?

Starters:

Arrieta (BAL/AAA)

Matusz (AAA)

Eveland (BAL RP)

Wada (BAL)

Chen (BAL)

Bergesen (AAA)

Hammel (BAL)

Britton (BAL/AAA)

Hunter (BAL)

Tillman (AAA)

I now see five starters that likely need to be on the team and at least two or three others that should.

Relievers

Berken

Johnson

O'Day

Ayala

Patton

Strop

Simon

Gregg

Lindstrom

If you move Eveland into the pen and release Simon that you have nine relievers. There has to be a deal at some point moving forward.

It wouldn't be an Orioles offseason without signing a 30-something reliever coming off an artificially good year to a major-league deal. I don't see the point of this signing at all unless it means Gregg is going to be jettisoned.

Even if Gregg is getting dealt, this signing is still poor.

Pretty much my thoughts. Prior to last year he wasn't good since 2007 with the Nats.....and we give him a ML deal. Why? I think this first time I've been somewhat critical of DD. I know its not a big deal, but it just seems dumb.

Eh, it's just a run-of-the-mill bullpen signing, IMO. He's not blocking a stud arm or anything, and he would have been one of the Orioles' best non-closer relievers the majority of his career when compared to our bullpens of years past.

He'll be relatively dependable, unlike Berken and some of these other middle relievers.

There is really no difference between him and Berken or anyone else.

He is a generic, dime a dozen guy coming off a lucky season.

Not only is Double D building a bad roster, but he seems to be building TWO bad rosters! How many people does he think we have room for?????

He is clearly tying to build a roster of legit major league backups in Norfolk.

Depth, depth, depth.

Honestly, given the constraints on him (particually the lateness of hiring), what else could have achieved for 2012?

    • I always thought that if you weren't around 10:1 you weren't trying hard enough.
    • Adley was a nearly finished product when picked, if not for tradition and service time stuff he could have been in the majors shortly after he left college. Gunnar needed 1000+ minor league plate appearances as a high school pick. Ask this same question about the 1990-2017 Orioles with their development system. They certainly could have found a way to screw up Gunnar, would have been harder with Adley.
    • I don’t think it was weird at all.  EDC said it but I thought it unfolded as expected.  You knew the QBs would go. You knew tons of OT and WR would go.   This was always going to be an offense dominated first round. The Oline and WR depth is in every round. I suspect that they go Oline twice or Oline/WR tonight.  Obviously you never know how the board falls but I think that’s what is likely.   This is mainly going to be an offense draft. EDC said a few weeks ago that they will draft a RB.  My guess is that the RB goes sometime in day 3. They will come out of this draft with at least 2 more Olineman, one WR and one RB.  I suspect they take a safety at some point as well. The question will be do they take 9 players.  The Ravens didn’t feel this was a draft with as many draftable players as years past, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they make some kind of a trade.
    • 1:2 is good.  Elite is a player like Arraez who is 1+:1.

    • Was reading Wiggins write up on ESPN. He appears to be more of a home run threat than Koolaid. He had a pick 6 each of the last 2 years.
    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
