I just wish I had it in me to proudly defend these guys and wholeheartedly say that I think Grimsely is lying. Good LORD, do I hope they are innocent but... I just don't know. It's very painful to all of a sudden go from being so proud to have these guys represent me and my city and my team to not being able to honestly say I am sure they didn't cheat. 24 hrs before this story broke, I was a one-woman Orioles cheering section in Fenway Park. Proudly wearing a Roberts jersey and celebrating Miggy's new hits record...

To love them. They are just doing what all the "cool kids" are doing.

Good point.

However, Grimsley was busted by the Feds on his shipment of illegal stuff and Bonds is being investigated by the IRS for tax evasion which seems to be a totally different beast. The Bonds investigation for roids has cooled this season...at least, nothing has been made publicly known.

It's gonna get really thick this offseason, just wait.

Tax evasion is the federal cure-all to investigate criminals. Thats how they got Al Capone, it wasn't murder, racketeering or anything like that. It was tax evasion.

Alot of people have known about these names for a long time, and no other information has been uncovered. So until actual evidence comes out that are more than just claims we need to take a step back and just kind of hang in a wait and see mode.

Yes, I understand about the "court-of-public opinion" thats all true but all that is needed is something larger and shinier to get the public's attention away from it. For example, Juan Rincon was suspended for steroids, pre-Raffy, no one seems to care about that anymore and he has been allowed to go on with his career.

Good points.

However Juan Rincon is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Raffy was old, a future Hall of Famer, just reaching 3k hits and famously wagged his finger at the hearing committee saying he didn't do roids. Rincon is NOWHERE near that.

Raffy was humiliated into retirement. Can't really blame him for that.

Of course you are innocent until proven guilty....in a court of law.

But, not in the court of public opinion.

The chickens are coming home to roost.

MLBPA refused to bargain on this issue (Testing) initially and later rebuffed real meaningful testing. They hid behind a phony "privacy" issue.

Only when public pressure mounted to the point that their credibility was at stake, Congress inquired, and some of his own union finally said enough- did Fehr relent and agree to stricter testing.

They could have nipped this in the bud years ago.

Public opinion has always been a nice way of describing a lynch mob, but I was referring to what used to be our justice system. If you've been keeping up with currrent events you will know that you can be arrested and imprisoned indefinitely with out recourse to due process. As to steroids testing: there is no fool proof system they could implement that would be anything other than cosmetic.

So, there are accusations or evidence that Tejada, Gibbons, Roberts, Palmeiro and Sosa - all current or recent Orioles - took steroids, plus of course Grimsley. Steroid use is/was apparently rampant with the O's. Look at the O's record in recent years. And they say steroids make players better?

Heh. I know Nick is the future. But man, you love who you love, unfortunately. At least the season is over and I have until April to negotiate the moral issues involved with rooting for these guys again.

I believe there is circumstancial evidence that he did not use steriods while an Oriole :P

I think....no, I know....that if my name was spashed all over the news for something like this, and I KNEW I was innocent, I would have my attorney suing the *ss off of somebody. I suspect such a lawsuit might force the "supposed evidence" to the surface if nothing else.

Not likely you could sue anybody here. You have to proove intent to libel and the paper is clearly not trying to do that.

Right, and you'd have to prove you're NOT using, which would be even harder. You can't sue for libel if you can't prove its not true.

    • Adjusting to the bigger parks with the third deck was my argument after his 23 performance. I maintain that he can play well enough defensively in center to hold down the spot for a while (perhaps until EBJ or another prospect breaks into the league) but ultimately he is probably best suited in RF. I see a lot of Charlie Blackmon in CC’s game.
    • He’s really something to watch when he’s got all his pitches working.  I think that even if Bradish is slightly better than Burnes, the O’s probably would start Burnes in game one of a playoff series due to the experience factor.  But that decision is more than four months away and like you said, let’s see who’s healthy.
    • He just didn’t play defense very well during last year’s call-up.  It was aberrational, because he was a good defender in the minors.  Maybe just adjusting to seeing the ball well in the bigger stadiums with upper decks etc. I’m very impressed with his ability to move to any of the three OF spots from one game to the next, or even within games, and play well.
    • Prompted by a post in another thread by @RZNJ, I was looking to see if Adley’s low walk rate was caused partially by being more aggressive on the first pitch.  Hardly.   Last year Adley had 40 PA where he put the first pitch in play.  This year, in 50 games he’s only done it six times!   His first pitch swing rate has dropped from 11.9% to 9.4%.   So, he’s actually doubled down on his take the first pitch strategy. On the other hand, Adley clearly has decided decided to get more aggressive in two-strike counts.  Last year, 27.7.% of his strikeouts were caught looking; this year, only 7.7%.    Last year, Adley let the count get full 113 times, and walked in 50 of those, striking out 20 times.  This year after 50 games he has only had a full count 18 times, walking 6, striking out twice.   Last year, Adley let the count get to two strikes  388 times, striking out 101 rimes and producing a .654 OPS in those at bats. This year, Adley has had 117 two-strike counts, striking out 39 times and producing a .547 OPS. There’s a lot to unpack there, but my big takeaway is that Adley is being even less aggressive than before on first pitches, and more aggressive pretty much everywhere else, and he’s not letting a two-strike pitch close to the strike zone go by without taking a swing at it.
    • It’s a weird and interesting small sample stat, but I don’t put much stock in it.
    • Exactly.   People have gone to a lot of trouble to properly weight the various outcomes of an at bat.
    • Even after being swept in STL, and then doing the sweeping  of the White Sox. Exact same record on this day as last year. But the big tests are coming.Almost no days off for 45 days. All AL Eastern teams for a while. It will be very interesting, and telling.
