Thanks Nadecir....definitely missed that and I stand corrected. It seems this would lend credibility to Grimsley's initial statements, and less so for the back-tracking he seems to be doing now. But the question remains, is he making an assumption that Tejada, Roberts, and Gibbons were using steroids, or did he witness something?

It doesn't matter if he witnessed it. That makes it a he said/he said affair. THe players will back up each other. THey will close ranks against Grimsley like they have against Canseco.

What we don't know is if there is some paper trail (or other) connection linking GIbbons/Roberts/Tejada/Clemens/Pettitte/etc.... with the doctors, suppliers, mfg companies, etc........that Grimsley mentioned as his sources in the affadavit.

Thats a little ridiculous, IMO.

Having read the affidavit I see nothing but a very general discription of the information Grimsley alledgedly gave . If I were his lawyer I would want to see a transcript of the conversation. Since the information was volunteered without the presence of an attorney I doubt one exhists but Novitsky and the other agents would have to be thoroughly deposed before I would except the info as valid in terms of what grimsley actually volunteered.

I see no reason not to want an actual transcript. Primary source is always better then a secondary source. If the agents didn't record the conversation I would argue that is somewhat negligent, unless Grimsley would not allow a recording.

Still, I think the source in question is the reporter who is putting the names to the redacted sections of the Affidavit. How is that information trust worthy?

Forgive me for not wading into the entire thread, but here is the one obvious point that I haven't heard mentioned:

If someone is wrongly accused or slandered by someone else, the obvious course would be to sue them for libel, or defamation of character.

These vague denunciations by the players that I've seen quoted ("I've passed all the tests") fall far short IMO of what they would say and do -- press charges against Grimsley -- if they were truly innocent.

Is this off base or does this strike home?

Even if they wanted to sue Grimsley, how would the accused players prove that they never did HGH, or undetectable steroids?

Well, shouldn't Grimsley have to prove that the players did do HGH or steroids, not the other way around. I mean Grimsley is the one doing the accusing.

Show me the money...

Half of the sports media knew these names months ago but didn't have the one the record sources to release the names. I suspect Grimsley himself told several reporters the names off the record. It's also probable that Segui told reporters after speaking with Grimsley.

These are the names in the affidavit, I wouldn't worry about the validity of that.

I think Grimsley can probably say whatever he wants in this context (not that it's right or admirable). I mean, I can say "I think Mark Carver did steroids" and I don't think you could really sue me for that.

Didn't Angelos actually offer to represent Palmeiro last year in civil action against Canseco after his book came out? In retrospect that offer seems pretty comical.

I doubt if we see Angelos offer up his representation this time.

An affidavit is a sworn statement. Knowingly lying is perjury. So the person giving the affidavit doesn't really need to have a TON of evidence to back up his claims. And judging by the affidavit, Grimsley's biggest evidence is that someone has the "worst back acne" he had ever seen. Well I don't want this to be too much info, but I had some battles with back acne, I don't do steroids.

The interviewer didn't really ask him what he was basing his accusations on either. So what we have is a statement, and little else.

I posed the lawsuit question somewhere way back in this thread, and was told basically the same thing. It seems to me that the accuser would be the one who should be forced to verify his accusation with evidence, not the other way around. he is the one being sued. The same as a prosecutor would have to prove their case to get a conviction.

Why is that comical? Pete said, hey if you want to sue him, I'll represent you?

    • I know @RZNJ have had our disagreements over this topic in the past. But I would say, it all depends on who you think is the better defender between Westburg and Mayo for 3B? Who you think is the better defensive infielder between Holliday and Mayo.? And who is the better RF between Mayo and Kjerstad? - Ultimately the answer to these questions will determine where guys end up playing?
    • I like this move too Kopech could be a weapon out of the bullpen and the cost to get him in prospects shouldn't be outrageous. I'm sure there's already a thread on the White Sox board proposing Samuel Basallo and Cade Povich for Kopech.
    • I'm just sitting here trying to picture this exact same video and music, except with John Angelos in place of DR.  Its literally unimaginable. If there is one thing DR is showing, its that he's a fan of the team he owns.  That's the one thing (along with his fortune) that gives me hope for an extension or two.  How could a guy who's this big a FAN let Gunnar walk w/o giving his absolute best effort to retain him?
    • Worth considering. If he is the odd man out from the rotation I would like to see how Kremer does in relief and maybe work his way into high leverage. Still, Grayson's stuff is more intriguing as a potential lights out closer.
    • I think DR has already shaken more hands and done more fan photos since March than PA ever did.  DR is approaching ownership like a fan, because he’s doing what I would do if I had the money to buy a team. I wasn’t sure he was going to leave the MASN broadcast booth on Opening Day, he was having fun talking O’s history with Jim Palmer!
    • That’s possible especially since you wonder who will be out there. If I were Getz, at this point, I probably hold onto him a little while and see if his raw numbers get better but that’s a risk too.
    • I have the assume the extra off days early are for two reasons - weather in many cities much more questionable in April/early May, and pitchers aren't fully ramped so the extra days off provides more rest. I kind of like how the minors do it though - just off every Monday, and play the other 6 days, no questions asked.  That would allow for a lot of weeks w/ two 3-game series, and a few w/ a 2-gamer and a 3-gamer.  No idea if it would work fully to get in the 162, since the minors play less games, but it lead to a built in rest day for every team, every week, all at the same time - no games w/ a fully rested team vs a team that just had 2 out of 4 days off and all that.   Obviously the players make big money; but its streaks like the one detailed in the OP where they really earn it.  That's a major grind.
