By the way, this thread should be taken out of the "Orioles Talk" section until our offense starts putting up some runs on Opening Day against the Red Sox.

I put it here because of the claims that Smoak/Ike Davis give equal production as Kendrys/Cruz, just because they have similar OBPs.

Walks compared to hits is difficult to assess because you don't know what that hit was' date=' a single or a home run? What walks does for you instead of hitting the ball is it takes away the double play ball possibility and probably escalates the pitch count of the starting pitcher.[/quote']

you've compared apples to oranges by comparing walks to outs.

Baseball is a game of situations.

No outs, and first batter of the inning up, and can get a walk, this can turn into a good thing. The old cliche about staying away from lead-off walks, because they usually come back to bite you.

2 out, man on 2nd. Of course you want the hit, to drive in the run, or at least advance them to third. Anything but the 3rd out.

So with Lough on 2nd with 2 outs and the game is tied, you're going to root for Manny Machado to get a walk?
Of course, the key is patience. If you are patient, anyone can get a walk. All they have to do is get 3 in a row and they win. It's that over aggressive urge to be the hero, and get the big hit that results in the final out.

And the fact that hitting a little white ball that dives and curvers thrown anywhere in the range of 75-95 mph typically is usually a failing endeavour... even for the best of the best.

The name of the game is to not get out. Good things happen (more often than not) to teams that make less outs per plate appearance than the team they are playing.

We can't discuss outs. It's hits against walks. Take a stand Hank.

Watching Mayberry the other night. Andy was trying to brag about a high school no hitter he pitched. Guber spilled the beans that they lost. Gee Dad, how could you lose and still pitched a no-hitter. Guber said, because he walked 17.
