Gausman has just been surviving all of his starts lately. The last semi-impressive start he has had was the Yankees one before the All-Star break.

So you think the 6.2 IP 1 ER in Seattle was bad. How about the 7IP 3 H game vs the Angles. Maybe you liked the 6 IP 3 ER vs Washington. If not that the 6IP 1ER vs Cleveland.

I guess you are not gonna like any unless he is perfect then. The Angles game he gave up just one baserunner in 6 of the 7 innings and all three hits in the same inning and you didn't like it.

The Angels game didn't he basically walk the bases loaded in like the 5th or 6th inning? Was going fine and then out of nowhere his command went?

Seattle game was "fine" but still had no command and allowed a ton of base runners. Probably would have been lit up against an offense with a pulse. Same thing with Washington and Cleveland. As I said, he just seems to be surviving his starts lately, but not really inspiring a ton of confidence. Unless you are confident he can continue the tight rope act.

He had a tough inning in the Angles game but that does not mean he had a poor game. Most pitchers have one bade inning the rest he was dominant. He had a no hitter going into that inning then a tough inning then just two straight 3 up 3 downs after. The Mariners game he had 10 base runners in 7 innings which is a decent start when you only get in 1 run.

As I said a Whip of 1.3 is not tight roping for some reason you seem to think he is going to be a 2 ERA with a Whip of 1 or something.

Seems to me that Gausman is hitting the wall. He is nearing his career high in innings pitched and doing it at the ML level. I'd like to see Ubaldo eased back into Gausman's spot. With only two pitches he's not going to be effective against the playoff teams. Also he is much better suited to the bullpen

The team really needs Gausman to come on strong these last few weeks. People point to a 3rd pitch, but he'll be okay if he can command his fastball. That is priority #1.

If he had two consistent pitches, maybe. For a guy with his fastball velocity and movement, they square him up really well. The lack of a third pitch will probably get Ubaldo back in the rotation at some point this season. The league is getting onto Gausman a bit now, he doesn't have enough weapons, and he can't throw 80% fastballs and be successful. Batters get to pick from a fastball or changeup and just sit on that pitch, he'll end up as a late inning reliever if he can't get a third pitch. He might even be a 1 1/2 pitch pitcher right now.

I've been saying the same thing.

You don't need a dominant third pitch.......but guys have to at least have a modicum of respect for it.

When he can't locate his changeup, he becomes extremely hittable because guys can sit fastball and sit on one half of the plate.

96 will strike a ton of guys out in the minors. 96 gets taken yard in the majors if you can't keep guys even a little bit off it.

His strikeout rate tells the story, guys are whiffing on that fastball and that's been his downfall. Honestly, I'm not super positive it's going to magically improve any time soon either.

Ubaldo may get his spot back in the rotation after all, but neither of them should be starting in the playoffs.

4 man rotation, Tillman, Chen, Norris, gonzo........Gausman and ubaldo can come out of the pen if necessary. Wouldn't mind seeing ubaldo left off any postseason roster and having Gausman take McFarland's spot in the pen as the long man.

He basically has a league average Whip, not giving you a ton of innings, strike outs are plummeting, walks are increasing, all against some pretty bad offenses. Even the Angels offense was in a huge slump when Gausman played them.

He has been trending down as of late, surviving his starts. It's great that he has battled out of trouble, but a lot of that is because he is playing the Cardinals and Mariners and Cubs.

Hopefully, Gausman has his one pitch working tonight. If he sucks again, I suspect Ubaldo will be getting his spot and KG will be heading to the pen, which is more appropriate for a 1 trick pony.

What point is there in sending him to the bullpen? He won't really help to strengthen it and it would just be a waste.

    • I thought Chisholm missed home too. They didn’t appeal tho I don’t think.
    • Now run scores and Yanks take lead.
    • Inexcusable missed call in NY. Review Cleo at showed Chisholm out at 2nd. They upheld safe call.
    • Well, good on posters who proved the SSS side of "Guards Ball." I just found it striking in terms of the narrative in that article, which was basically the same as what most around here were complaining the O's lacked: clutch hitting, passing the baton, aggressive running, getting runners in from third, etc. I guess the real bottom line is "whatever works." Which of course varies from case to case. The old Bill James postseason wisdom was that HRs are the ticket, since you face good pitching and get so few hits. So back to you, Elias, keep crunching those numbers...
    • First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.
    • Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
    • If the franchise were better, the fan base would be too.  It’s been a rough 40 years.
